  1. John MILSTED c. 12 Oct 1777, Ospringe, Kent, England; bur. 16 Nov 1848, Ospringe, Kent, England.

    Notes:
John Milsted, Jr. was the first born and only surviving male child of the two sons that had been born to John Milsted, Sr. and Mary (nee Sherlock). Where his father's family had an over-abundance of female children, John, Jr's. own family consisted mostly of boys - 7 of his 12 children, in fact, were boys.

According to the 1841 census, John, Jr. was living at the Faversham Arms with his second wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Mary. He was then employed as a shipwright. By 1842 he appears on the Burgess Rolls for Faversham as owning a house on Ospringe Road and appears on those rolls every year thereafter until 1847. John died during 1848. His second wife died sometime between 1841 and 1851.

A John Milsted was licensee of the Faversham Arms in Faversham from 1845 or earlier until 1847 or later. In light of the residence given on the 1841 census, I believe that John, Jr. is the fellow in question as the only other logical candidate would be his son, John. However, that younger John never did appear to move into Faversham at any time and in fact also disappears from Luddenham after the birth of Susannah. (See the notes for John Milsted, III.)

  1. John MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) c. 28 Oct 1798, Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
John Milsted, III, was born during 1798 at Ospringe. He was the first child of John Milsted and Mary Nutt, yet very little is known of this individual. Although the evidence would suggest that this is the individual who married Sarah Barrus at Luddenham during 1820 I have my doubts. Rather, based on the 1841 census, which unfortunately does not record relationships of the inhabitants of a house to the head of the house, I tend to think that the John here may in fact have been the John who had married Mary Nutt, this being the second marriage for him. John and Sarah settled at Luddenham long enough to have three children: Mary Ann in 1821; John Samuel in 1823 and Susannah in 1826. All traces of Milsteads disappear from Luddenham after 1826.

    Notes:
G.R.O. Death index records her name as Catherine Gregory - a name that was recorded on the 1841 census. She was christened as Christian. Burial entry also records her name as Catherine, age 70 and residence St. Mary's Road, Preston-Faversham.

  4. Emmery MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) c. 16 Oct 1803, Ospringe, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Christened on 16 October 1803, Emmery was the fourth child of John Milsted and Mary Nutt. Like his father, Emmery spent his life intimately connected to the seas, first as a master mariner, and in his later years, as a shipwright. He married twice and had twelve children. Sadly, though, four of those children died within a few days or months of their births. Two other children died around the time of their first birthdays.

Emmery had firstly married Rebecca Ward, who was from another well-placed dredging family in Faversham. It was that union that produced ten of the children. Rebecca was a hearty soul producing all of her children within 15 years, amongst which were three sets of twins. This is a feat for the times. Most twins, along with their mother, typically did not live for very long following the birth and unfortunately, although Rebecca seemed to have sailed through her early pregnancies and deliveries, there was only one child of all of the twins that did survive - Edward, who was christened on 7 May 1832. Only four other of her children survived into adulthood: Sarah Ann, who married George Evernden, a dredger; John Ward; William; and Emery James. Rebecca lived for 6 years following the birth and death of her last set of twins in 1841, finally passing away herself on 11 January 1847 at the young age of 41 years.

Emmery's second marriage produced two more children, only one of which is known to have survived - Henry.

Although Emmery and his new wife should appear on the 1851 census in Faversham or Preston, I have not found an entry for them and I have not ventured farther afield to find them.

  5. Maria MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) c. 2 Feb 1806, Ospringe, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Maria was the fifth child of John Milsted and Mary (nee Nutt). She married John Chambers and had at least one child - a daughter named Eliza who was born during 1832. Very little information is immediately available concerning Maria and her family. Although not widowed, Maria was staying with her parents at the Faversham Arms in 1841. I have been unable to determine the fate of her and her tiny group after that time.

  6. Thomas MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) c. 22 May 1808, Ospringe, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Thomas was born and christened at Ospringe during 1808. He married his sister-in-law, Ann Gregory, on June 18, 1831 at Preston and together they produced eleven children: Mary Ann who died shortly after her first birthday; George, a mariner; Thomas, Jr., who eventually worked as a fisherman and beer retailer; Samuel a mariner whose ultimate fate was to drown during a storm at sea; Emma; Ellen; Alice; and Daniel Walter, also who eventually became a mariner. Two other of Thomas and Ann's children died during their infancy: Thomas born during 1836 and Ann born during 1844. Frederick John, who was born during 1849 died two months prior to his 7th birthday.

In 1841 Thomas, a shipwright like his father, and family were living with John and Judith Gregory - Ann's parents. By 1851 Thomas and family had moved to Flood Lane and George, at age 16, was already working as a mariner. Thomas was still employed as a shipwright.

As of the 1861 census, Thomas and family were living on Tanner Street at a place called "Friendship". He was still working as a shipwright and the family had taken in three boarders all from Westall, Suffolk and all of whom were labourers in the local brickfields. One of the boarders, George Card, was eventually to become Thomas' son-in-law, marying Emma on 31 January 1864. In 1861, however, Emma was working as a general servant.

By 1871 Thomas, at age 67, was an unemployed ship builder living on Flood Lane. Ann had died and Thomas had remarried, Sarah, herself a widow. Living with them was Sarah's daughter, Mary A. Wraight, 19, who was working as a general domestic servant and I fear the only source of income for the household. Thomas and his second wife moved to Halling prior to the census of 1881. There, Thomas found employment as a carpenter.

Author Richard Hugh Perks states "my first reference is in the 1865 Mercantile Navy List where he [Thomas Milsted] appears as owner of the fishing smack ROYAL GEORGE. This may be the same THOMAS MILSTED who purchased the small fishing bawley NANCY in 1896 (Reference Fa 3/1 Fishing Register)."

It is my belief that the Thomas Milsted who owned the Royal George is this particular Thomas and that it was his son, Thomas who purchased the NANCY.

  9. Henry MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) b. 1813, Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Henry, born circa 1813 at Ospringe, first appears on the 1851 census with his wife, Elizabeth and one son, Henry, Jr., born 1850. Henry was working as a baker and the family lived on Fountain Yard in Faversham.

By 1861 Henry had died or otherwise abandoned the family. His wife and children had fallen on very difficult times and were described as paupers living in the union workhouse. As with his brother, Matthew, Henry appears to have roamed the land looking for work as witnessed by the diverse locations of birth places of his children: Eleanor in 1851 at Hythe; Gary in 1852 at Preston; Mary Ann, 1853 at Hastings, Sussex.

The 1871 census saw little change in the family's circumstances: Elizabeth and the other two of Henry's daughters were still living at the workhouse. Elizabeth and Mary Ann, however, were both working as domestic servants, no doubt at the behest of the Union guardians. Henry's wife was also living at the workhouse but working as a dressmaker.

As of 1881 daughter, Elizabeth, still unmarried, was visiting with her aunts, Elizabeth Berry and Maria Chambers. Henry's wife and daughter, Mary Ann, could be found on the census.

  12. Matthew MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) c. 28 Mar 1819, Luddenham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Matthew was the last child born to John Milsted and Mary (nee Nutt). He was christened at Luddenham and very little is known of his life. Matthew was a seaman, largely unemployed. He did marry and had three known children, two daughters and one son. All of his children were born in different parts of Kent, indicating that Matthew was on the move regularly looking for work. The first child was born at St. Mary Dover during 1845, followed by the second at Ashford during 1848. The last child to be born was the only son and his namesake: Matthew, Jr.. Sadly Matthew, Jr. was born at the workhouse and died there at 17 days of age. A hurried baptism was performed for Matthew, Jr. at the Faversham parish church on 24 March 1855.

    Notes:
Edward married Ann Ruck on December 25th, 1846 at the parish church of Faversham. John Gregory, Edward's brother, and Ellen Read were witnesses to the marriage. I have not been able to identify who Ellen Read is as of this time (December, 2003). Ellen Read may well be a clue to an earlier generation of Ruck's. By 1851 Edward and Ann's first two children had been born: Elizabeth, who married George Duncan, and Alice, who married George Wyles. Edward was a mariner in the Gregory tradition and the family lived next door to that of his first cousin, Peter Page Gregory, in the Brents. By 1861 all the other children had been born and the family had returned to Abbey Street in Faversham.

Edward died prior to the 1871 census, we are told, from blood poisoning. Ann and her children, Charles and Ann, were living at 8 Thomas Square at the time of the 1871 census. Ann had had to resort to returning to work as a laundress to support the family.

As of 1881 Ann was living with an Isaac Harris, age 36, barge captain, of Faversham and several of his nieces and nephews at 22 Abbey Street. We have no idea why she would choose to live with these people rather than with her own children. Ann was then working as a labourer at the Gun Cotton Powder Works.

Edward's burial record states that he was 45 years old and resided at Abbey Street. Family lore indicates that Edward died of some form of blood poisoning. Family lore also records that Edward had the nickname of "Blowhard". This name apparently came into use as Edward would be the only fisherman brave or silly enough to venture out into the sea for his daily catch despite hazardous weather conditions - weather that would leave all of the other fisherman of the town standing on the banks of Faversham Creek watching and waiting for Edward to return after his daily run. The blood poisoning result from a cut Edward had on his great toe which became badly infected. The toe had to be surgically removed but that, sadly, didn't stop the rush of gangrene up through his leg and body.

As of the 1851 census John and his small family were living on Water Lane and he worked as a mariner. In their short time together, John having died 5 years and 5 months after his marriage, they had had four children. The last of John's children, Elizabeth, was born 3 months after her father's death in 1854. Neither of John's two sons survived - John having died during 1853 and Charles during 1854.

By 1861 Susan had remarried a man by the name of George Fright, a publican at the Royal Standard on Court Street. Jane and Elizabeth were still living with their mother. This family left Faversham by 1871 but not before Jane had also died at age 17 during April, May or June of 1867. George Fright had been born at Whitstable and it may be that the family returned to that town.

    Notes:
George married Caroline Dodd, who was his first cousin through the family of his grandmother, Judith Dodd. Together, they had ten children: George William, born 1857, later to become a mariner; Edward born 1859, also later to become a mariner; Emily Elizabeth who worked as a kitchen maid; Mary Christina who eventually went out to work as a servant; John Charles, a general labourer; Charles and Walter Lynch, the twins in the family; Ernest, Alfred and William. William died a few days before his second birthday.

By 1871 George, Caroline and family were living at the Brents. All children, except Charles and Walter Lynch, were still then attending school.

In 1881 Emily Elizabeth was working as a kitchen maid on Tyndale House farm, which at that time was owned by William Miller. I can imagine that her work was demanding as, in addition to the family, there were also 13 other men, 3 other women and 4 boys employed on the farm. The remaining members of George and Caroline's family were living on the Brents. The two oldest sons, George William and Edward, were working as mariners and John Charles, at age 14 had gone to work as a general labourer. Mary Christina was living and working at Albion Terrace as a domestic servant for Thomas Attwater, the Harbour Master at Faversham.

George, Sr. owned a ship called the 'George William'. He was a freeman and a dredger as had been his ancestors before him. Many of the Gregory ships were built at Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey.

Both George and Caroline died sometime after 1881, George having died first but both were buried in Preston-next-Faversham churchyard. After George's death, Edward had to pitch in and help his mother look after the family. Caroline took in sewing and whatever else she could do to support the family but continued to raise her children to be hard-working and God-fearing. In recent years, all of the tombstones were moved against the churchyard walls so that the grounds could be groomed more easily. Apparently, Edward's daughter, Winifred, used to read the tombstones frequently as a little girl and wondered what her ancestors were like. Nearly all of the Gregory line had blue or grey eyes with fair or red hair.

Winifred also remembered that all of her family talked very softly. Caroline Dodd's parents had been reasonably well off and owned quite a large farm. They, however, fell on hard times when a sea wall broke and flooded their farm with salt water. Later, a hired hand was swallowed with animals and implements when a large crater-like opening in the ground suddenly and violently appeared. The family lost many of their farm animals during that tragic event.

The fifth child of Edward and Christian Gregory, Daniel started his employment years as an apprentice with his father dredging for oysters.

On December 25th, 1853, Daniel married Mercy Hobbs and had his first child at Faversham, Emma Eliza who was christened on 1 April 1855 in Faversham parish church. By 1857 the family had moved to Oare where two more children were born - Edward and William. At the time of the 1861 census Daniel and family were living at "the Cottages", Luddenham and Daniel continued in his occupation as dredger. The family returned to Faversham during the early 1860s and two more children were born - Henry and Lilly A.. Also during 1875 Daniel's eldest daughter, Emma Eliza married Robert Edward Claringbould (also known as Cladingbold), a gardener at Stourmouth.

By 1881 Daniel, his wife and the two youngest children were living on Seagate Street in Folkestone, their two oldest children already having married. Daniel had become a licensed victualler.

Rebecca was missing from the 1861 census. No burial or marriage entry was found in Faversham parish registers and it may be that she had moved away from the town.

    Notes:
Mary Anne was the eighth child of Edward and Christian Gregory. She married Henry Smeed, a local baker, on 6 July 1856 at Faversham. The witnesses for their marriage were an interesting choice: Eliza Bridger and Frederick George Streeter who married each other in June of 1858. Frederick George Streeter was Mary Anne's full second cousin through her great-grandparents, Thomas Nutt and Mary Herman. It is unknown if this choice of witnesses was made because of a close relationship with her Streeter cousins or if Mary Anne or Henry were close friends of either Eliza Bridger or Frederick George Streeter. Thomas Nutt, Mary Anne's great-grandfather, did live long enough to actually see his great-daughter born. He died in the January following her christening in July of 1838. Mary Anne's grandfather, John Milsted, was still alive at the time of her birth. But, unfortunately, she never knew either her grandmother Milsted (nee Nutt) or her great-grandmother Nutt (nee Herman).

Immediately after their marriage, Mary Anne and Henry lived at the Quay but moved to West Street by the time their second child was christened in 1862. Altogether, Mary Anne and Henry had at least nine children. There is the possibility that there was one other son as in 1861 a Henry Smeed aged 1 was visiting with Emma Duncan and Christian Gregory. The family was still at 28 West Street in 1881.

On July 29th 1888 Emily Susannah married James Usher, a cooper and took up residence at 28 Fielding Street. Unfortunately, Emily was not to have a long and happy life with James as he died during October of 1890, just 3 months after his second wedding anniversary. Even sadder is the fact that Emily Susannah had been left to face life with one very young child and another on the way without the support of a loving husband. Her last child, also a daughter, was born during April of 1891, about 7 months after the death of James.

By the time of the 1891 census both Emily Susannah Usher and her father, Henry Smeed, were widowed. Emily along with her two daughters, Harriet, born 1889 and Clara, born March 1891, were living with her father and her two youngest siblings at 7 St. John's Road. Percy, then 15, was working as an errand boy at port. Also living with the Smeed family was a boarder named Charles Willett, 25, an ironmonger by trade.

    Notes:
About 1860 Thomas married Emma Austin. By the time of the 1871 census the family was living at the Brents, Preston with five of their nine children: Thomas G., William, Austin E., Edith Sarah Elizabeth, and Walter. Thomas, following the family tradition, was a mariner.

By 1881 Emma had been widowed, Thomas having drowned during September of 1879. The family was still living at the Brents and son, Thomas, had taken up the occupation of mariner. William and Austin were working as brickfield labourers.

The last of Thomas' children, George, was born a short six months before his father's death in 1879. Emma (nee Austen) died during 1934.

Of the nine children only one is known to have died unmarried - Frederick. George Gregory, who died during 1993 was the son of George, one of Thomas and Emma's sons and was able to provide some details of this branch of the Gregory family. He always said that his cousin Chrissey was a great source for the family's history. She died during 1992. Christiana, Chrissey's mother and daguther of Thomas, married John Quarrington and had one other child - Harold John Quarrington, in 1904..

Harriet married William Hyland and together they were landlords of the Willow Tap, a hostelry on Church Road in Faversham, for almost 38 years.

Walter was a master mariner involved with continental trade and as George described him 'a gay Lothario". Walter's career ended when he suffered a stroke at age 47 and had to come ashore. he married twice. His first wife was a belgian who owned a cafe in Ostend. Whilst Walter was on a particularly long voyage his wife sold the cafe and decamped with an American to parts unknown.

Edith Sarah Elizabeth married Victor Field, master of the barge "Wave Faversham". The "Wave" was a sailing barge (#45237) of 317 tons engaged in the coasting trade. Victor's brother, Thomas, worked as his first mate. Edith and Victor had three daughters - Jessie, Florence and Dolly. All daughters married but only Florence survived to a ripe old age. Sadly, Dolly died of Cancer circa 1927 and Jessie, inconsolably depressed, hung herself.

Austin also married. His only child died of tuberculosis at a young age.

William married and had two sons, William, Jr. and Stanley Arthur. William, Jr.'s son, Jack, became a member of the Atomic Research Council and was sent to Canada circa 1944.

Thomas George did marry but died without issue.

George (George's father) apparently hated the sight of the sea and instead took up farming. He operated Ham Farm of approximately 250 acres for some 42 years. On his retirement in 1936 his son, George, took over until 1961. At that time, the farm, then too large for George Jr., to manage, was sold and a general store purchased. George sold the store during 1972 and joined the Medway Ports Authority as a bridgeman. George Jr. married circa 1937 and had two children - Ann and Christopher. Although he did not elucidate on Ann's background, what George did write in letters leads me to believe that the two had a very close relationship. George was very proud of his two children and took great pleasure in his son's seafaring ways: Christopher, at that time, was a master mariner commanding the ferry "Pride of Calais" three times daily to France.

    Notes:
Emma was the tenth child of Edward and Christian Gregory. She married twice, first to Archibald Duncan on 6 May 1858 at Strood, Kent, and second, to Thomas Alfred Smith on 18 July 1876 at Faversham.

Archibald Duncan, as a child, had been baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but due to his raucous and unbecoming behaviour was banished from the church during the early 1850s. He had apparently been espousing theology contradictory to the doctrines of the Church. Archibald, unlike his brother, never returned to the Church. Family legend has it that Archibald used to be a heavy drinker with a violent temper as well as a womanizer. It was not unusual for him to spend all his earnings at the local tavern. Emma had to resort to hiding the money and locking Archibald out of the house, frequently.

Emma and Archibald did have three daughters and at the time of the 1871 census the famiily lived at St. Mary's Road, Preston. Archibald was recorded as being an unemployed master mariner during that census. If his reputation for incessant imbibing was true, I can well imagine that no ship owner in their right senses would entrust their ship or cargo to Archibald. Archibald died sometime between 1871 and 1876 when Emma remarried.

Emma's second husband was a gardener and a widower. Witnesses to the marriage were her uncle, Henry Smeed, and her cousin, Emily Smeed. Thomas had had a child from his previous marriage - William, born circa 1869. As of 1881 Thomas, Emma, Harriet, Jane, and William were living at 44 Park Road in Faversham. Eliza was working as a cook for Benjamin Atkins, an architect, at that time.

On November 27th, 1881 Eliza married Albert Frank Pay, a labourer and son of Frank Pay, a coal merchant. Witnesses to the marriage were her stepfather and sister, jane. Eliza and Albert had three known children. The family resided in Faversham at the 1891 census. Living with them was William Smith, Eliza's stepbrother, and from that can only conclude that the children were close to William. I also suspect that Eliza had been close to her grandmother Gregory as her third child was named in her honour.

  14. William GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 19 Jan 1843, Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
The youngest surviving son of Edward and Christian Milsted, William had the sea in his blood and a roving spirit to match. By the age of 18 he was actively employed as a mariner and, in fact, his existence was not discovered until he returned to Faversham in time to be caught on the 1891 census.

William married circa 1868 Ellen Hannah of Faversham and through some means settled at Frindsbury. There his first three children were born. The family then moved on to Upnor where the next two children were born. By 1880 the family had moved once more. This time, to Strood where Ernest Henry was born. At the time of the 1881 census, however, the family had returned to Frindsbury. William was still enumerated as being a mariner but they lived at the grocer's shop. Living with them was a boarder, William Warrington, a blacksmith from Yalding. William's last child was born at Strood during 1883.

The 1891 census saw the return of this roving family to Faversham. Living at 11 Park Road with the four youngest children, William was still engaged as a fisherman.

William Ernest married, during the last three months of 1896, a lady by the name of Florence Homewood. They had at least six children comprised of 5 daughters and 1 son.

Ernest Henry also married at Faversham, circa 1903 Ada Eliza. They had at least four sons.

Sarah was the first born child of her parents, Emmery and Rebecca. She is also first found in 1851 working as a house servant at the Three Tuns Inn on Tanner Street in Faversham. Eight lodgers in the inn on the night of the census hints that the inn was a popular and bustling place leaving the servants and hired help little time for relaxation or mischief. John Baldock, the victualler there, was her employer. I suspect that she had left her employment before her marriage to George Evernden in 1853.

    Notes:
John Ward Milsted is the first born and oldest surviving son of Emmery and Rebecca. He first makes his appearance on the census of 1861 married to Harriet, hiw wife of 7 years, with his four children: Emily R., who had been born at Milton during 1860; Emery, Charlotte and Alice. Working as a waterman at that time, John and family lived at the Pump Yard in Faversham.

At the time of the 1871 census, John was away at sea. His wife and children had moved to Oyster Court, a popular area of the town for the Milsteds. By 1881 both John and Harriet had died, leaving the youngest three children orphaned. This was a life-altering terrible blow to the children. Although Emery, at age 16, was working as a sailor he was unable to support himself and his two sisters, a problem which would continue throughout the next 18 years. As of 1881 the three children had made their home at the workhouse at Oare. Alice and Emery continued to live at the workhouse at least until 1899, being admitted and discharged many times over the years.

    Notes:
An 1881 census entry for an Edward Milsted born in Faversham has been found in Chirton, Northumberland. That Edward, however, claims to have been 40 years of age at the time. This Edward did have a brother who was born during 1839 which would be a closer match in age, but his name was Emery James - quite a significant difference from the name Edward. I have been unable to follow this fellow's life any further and so have, for the meantime, settled on attaching the 1881 census entry to Edward. He is one of only two Milsted men from the Faversham area who were unmarried, born during the 1830 to 1850 range and who also disappear from the local records.

In 1863 his first known child was born: Florence M. at Seasalter. By 1871 William and family, now including two sons - Henry Thomas, born during 1865 and Albert W., born during 1869 - were living at Lime Cottages. William had, since 1861, taken up dredging. This family does not appear on the 1881 census and most likely had moved away from the area.

    Notes:
Henry was the only surviving child of Emmery Milsted and Amy Savil. His first appearance occurs during the 1871 census when he was found working as a journeyman tailor. His employer was a William Cruickshanks, a tailor for Perth, Scotland, who had a shop on Pernes Place in the town.

By 1881, Henry was doing rather well for himself. He had obtained his victualler's licence and was operating the Abbey Tavern at 27-28 Abbey Street. He had also married and had four of his own children. Ellen Calvenery, age 20, was working as a general servant for the family and in the tavern.

By 1891 Henry was still operating as a licenced victualler, this time as proprietor of the Swan Inn at 6 Market Street. Staying with them was a niece, an Ada Blackbara, aged 13, from New Brompton. Henry was licensee of the Swan Inn in Faversham from 1885 to an undetermined date, likely close to 1898 when he took over the licence for the Park Tavern also in Faversham. Henry maintained the Park Tavern until 1905 and also acted as the Chairman of the local Licensed Victualler's Association. He reputedly left Faversham during 1906.

An interesting aside appeared in the local newspaper on 31 October 1975 in the "From our files" column, thusly:
"75 year ago the wind prevented illumination on carnival night, but in order that their trouble should not go all for nothing a few of those who had made the preparations lit up on Friday night. The principal display was that of Mr. Harry Milstead [sic] at the Park Tavern, the exterior of which as on previous occasions was really a picture."

Another article appeared in the same column in the paper of 12 April 1881:
"75 years ago...Members of the Faversham and District Licensed Victuallers' Association, at their fifth annual dinner, made a presentation to Mr. Harry Milsted, who had recently left the town, in appreciation of his services as chairman."

So it would seem that Henry had managed to rise a well-liked and respected stature in the Town.

    Notes:
George, the eldest son of Thomas Milsted and Ann (nee Gregory), had a very short life, dying a little past his first wedding anniversary. He did, however, manage to father one child before his untimely end: Georgina, born during 1856.

By 1871 George's wife, Emily, had remarried a man by the name of John Pepper, a labourer at the local cement works. By him she had an additional four children. Despite Georgina never having known her father, she must have be raised with his memory ever present as unlike other children of that time Georgina was always recorded with her correct birth surname - that of Milsted, on census and other contemporary records.

    Notes:
Thomas William Milsted had married and started his family five year prior to the loss of his mother (1863). He and his family lived on Bridge Place in Preston at the time of the 1861 census. Thomas was then working as a fisherman.

By 1871 Thomas and family had moved over to The Brents. He was still working as a fisherman and had had four more children. Thomas had also taken on the job as the local beer retailer at the Albion in Preston.

As of 1881 the family had moved again, this time to 5 Manor Place. Thomas was still working as a mariner but had relinquished his stint as beer retailer. Living with them was a woman by the name of Elizabeth Bushnell, referred to as Thomas' aunt. I suspect that, in fact, she was the aunt of his wife. Elizabeth Bushnell was born at Shepherdswell, kent and was a widow.

Sarah Ann, Thomas's wife, did not life to see any of her grandchildren, she having died during December of 1884. The 1891 census found Thomas living at 1 Mendfield Street with his in-laws, Thomas and Frances Millen. George had married and had two children of his own - Frank Thomas and Dorothy Ruth. In 1891 they were living at 46 St. John's Road and George was working as a railway porter.

Emily was still at home in 1891 along with her daughter, Lilly, who had been born during 1888. Also, as of 1891 Thomas, III was working as a porter at the workhouse in Herne.

  33. Samuel MILSTED Descendancy chart to this point (7.Thomas2, 1.John1) b. 1840, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England; d. 14 Aug 1884, Essex, England.

    Notes:
Samuel was Master and part owner of the ketch barge the LADY SONDES which foundered 14 August 1884 with all hands and considerable loss of life, including his own.

Samuel, born during 1840, was not one to buck the family tradition and eagerly followed in his family's footsteps towards pursuing a life on the sea. Other than as a child, he does not reappear on the census until 1881. Obviously, he spent a great deal of time away from home. However, in 1871 is the fist appearance of his family. He married Mary Ann of Deptford, circa 1864 and had at least ten children. In 1871 Mary Ann and her children were living at 30 South Road.

As at the 1881 census, Samuel and his family were still living at 30 South Road. For the first time, he was at home on census night and gave his occupation as that of mariner.

By 1891 Mary Ann, then a widow, had moved to 7 Whitstable Road. It was most likely necessary for Mary Ann to become resourceful and find remunerative work to support her large brood. On that census she was described as being a laundress. The five youngest children were living her; Frank working also, as a gardener, and Walter as a grocer's assistant. The family had also taken in a boarder, Mary Langabeer who was an elementary school teacher from Thorncliffe. The house on Whitstable Road was described as being larger than 5 rooms so it would seem that Mary Ann did well by her family doing what was required to keep them out of debt and out of the workhouse. No sign of the other children on the 1891 census and most likely the boys had moved awawy or gone to sea. Ada had possibly married.

Frederick is the only child for whom a marriage in Faversham occurs. He married Elizabeth Anne Young, 16 May 1889. At that time, Fred was working as a fireman and living at 8 Victoria Street, Stratford.

    Notes:
Emma was the sixth child born of Thomas Milsted and Ann (nee Gregory). She married George Card on 31 January 1864. Although George had come to Faversham to work in the brickfields, he was, in 1871 working as a labourer at the cement works. Emma and George had, in total, four children - two girls and two boys. Neither of the sons, unfortunately, survived beyond their first year of life. At the time of the 1871 census, Emma's brother, Daniel, was also living with them. Despite his young age - 16 - he was already had a work pursuing a career as a mariner.

Although I have not as yet tracked down the burial, it appears that Emma may have died as a result of complications during the birth of her last child in 1871. George Card went on to remarry on 18 November 1871 and have several more children with his new wife.

Emma, daughter of George and Emma, married William Ernest Beacon, a carpenter, on July 7th, 1889, but I have not been able to locate them on the 1891 census. The remaining daughter, Alice Card, may have died between 1871 and 1881, as I have been unable to locate her on the 1881 census.

    Notes:
Daniel Walter was the last child born to Thomas Milsted and Ann (nee Gregory). Throughout his life, just as his brothers, uncles and cousins, he worked in the marine trade. He married Mary Ann Palmer on December 25, 1875 and over the course of the following ten years had seven children. Daniel's second son, Thomas, and second daughter, Alice Maud, did not survive beyond their infancy: Alice Maud died at under 1 month old and Thomas at 11 months of age.

As of 1881 the family was living on St. John's Road and had with them Mary Ann's sister, Rosa Jane Webb. By 1891 the family complete were living at 18 Cambridge Road. With them were Mary Ann's brother, Teddy and her father, James Webb. It is a mystery why Mary Ann's relatives were always recorded as Webb on the census returns, as her name and her father's surname on the marriage certificate were clearly written as Palmer.

Percival Walter, Daniel's oldest son, married during the early 1900s and had at least one child - Harold Percival in 1908.

    Notes:
During May of 1866 Elizabeth (daughter of Edward and Ann Gregory) married George Duncan, a mariner and the brother of Archibald Duncan. Archibald Duncan had married Elizabeth's aunt, Emma Gregory during 1858.

Elizabeth and George Duncan lived at 92 West Street Passage in Faversham during 1871 with the first three of their children. In total, Elizabeth bore George a total for 14 children, a fact which was clearly recalled by Edith Owlet and which has now been proved to be true through the various church registers of baptisms and civil registrations of births. Despite Lizzie's hectic live with 14 children she managed to open and maintain a fish shop in or close to Faversham for many years.

George Duncan was born at Preston by Faversham, Kent on 26 August 1838 to Archibald Duncan and Deborah (nee Arnold). Archibald, George's father, had been a twin and certainly there is evidence of one set of twins having been born to George and Elizabeth - Emma and Deborah who were born during 1873. Sadly, Emma did not survive and died on 25 September 1873 just 7 days following her birth.

Some of the Duncan children emigrated to the U.S.A. - Edith, Clara, Ethel and Martha. Edith arrived at Ellis Island, New York City aboard the Berlin out of Southampton on 20 August 1894. Her age on arrival was a very young 16 years old. Martha arrived at Ellis Island on board the Mauretania on 26 January 1920 at age 28 years. She also had sailed out of Southampton.

As of 1881 George Duncan, Jr. was residing with his paternal aunt, Jane Odey and her family at 56 Canterbury Road, Gillingham, Kent.

Percy was the only child that could be easilytraced in the Faversham parish registers. He worked as a waterman and operated as a bridgeman for Faversham for several years. He married circa 1904 Agnes Florence. Together, they had at least four children: Mildred Florence in 1905, Ethel May 1907, Dorothy 1910 and Percy Charles in 1913.

Florence, or Flossie as we always knew her, did not marry. There are several family stories pertaining to Flossie but only one common thread among them. It is believed that she suffered from some form of mental incapacity - cause and complaint unknown. To what extent that handicap affected her daily life is also unknown. Flossie died during May 1907 and Elizabeth, her mother, during 1911.

As of 1881 the family lived at 3 Partridge Place but by 1891 had moved to 57 West Street in Faversham.

George is the only Duncan I have been able to determine that remained a member of the Latter Day Saints Church in Faversham, although I suspect that his parents had been very early converts to the Mormon faith. George was baptised into the LDS church at the age of 12 on 7 September 1851. On December 16, 1855 he was "cut off" from membership in the church but no reason was given in the record. George was later rebaptised into the church on 3 June 1872. As of December 15, 1872 George was installed as a deacon and elder of the church. On April 21, 1878 he was installed as a priest of the church and on November 24th that same year was again installed as an elder of the church.

Edith, George's sixth child, was the only one blessed in the traditional Latter-Day Saints blessing ceremony. The blessing took place on 22 June 1879 and was performed by George. He was very prompt in paying his tithes to the church and missionary fund and the church's records, so far as they exist, show that all tithes were paid between 1876 and 1879.

On 29 August 1916 at Salt Lake City temple numerous "Baptisms for the Dead" were performed at the request of one John A. Abery acting in the capacity of "friend" to the Duncans, with Phillis Gransden acting as proxy, for several of the female members of our Duncan family:

11555 Florence Duncan, born 10 May 1881, died May 1907, of Faversham
11556 Deborah Duncan (nee Arnold - by process of elimination), birth date not listed, died March 1866

    Notes:
Alice, the second daughter of Edward and Ann, is one child that none of her grand-nieces ever remembered. Very little is known of her short life other than what has been ascertained from parish registers. On her marriage, the witnesses were George and Elizabeth Duncan. Both Alice and George were described as living on Partridge Lane, he a labourer and she with no occupation. In the Oare Bishop's Transcripts I discovered that Alice and George had taken up residence in Oare and, there, had one daughter who died in infancy. Alice died within a few days of the burial of her daughter, at age 20 years. At Oare, George worked as a labourer in the gunpowder mill, this was after the terrible explosion of the mill which occurred during 1867.

  3. Edward GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (17.Edward3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 9 Nov 1851, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Edward was a mariner. He apparently went off to sea at a very early age, most likely around age 14 and didn't return home until some 18 years later. I have been unable to locate him on any census return up to and including 1901. Consequently, very little is known of him. It is suggested that Edward, nicknamed Teddy, fought in the Boer War and was sleeping on board a ship off the coast of South Africa at the time that it was attacked and all hands massacred. The family does not think he married.

Edward's story picks up with a signing on to the crew of the ship "Glenmorag". At that time he would have been in his 20s and certainly not the young lad of our family lore. The ship was launched in Glasgow during 1876 and sunk off the coast of Ocean Park, Washingston, U.S.A. on 18/19 March 1896. On a visit with Edith Owlett and Dorothy Hardman during June 2003, Edith produced a photograph of the crew of the Glenmorag taken circa 1889. I remarked that, at that time, Edward would have been grown man and not one of the boys on the deck. The Captain of the "Glenmorag", as inscribed on the photograph, was a Captain Archibald Currie. Capt. Currie had been in command of the Glenmorag for approximately only nine years before its sinking during early 1896. It is unknown if Edward was on the crew at the time of the sinking. Two men were lost during that event, neither one of them our Edward: James D. Adams of Dublin and John Readdie of Scotland. They are bith buried in Ilwaco Cemetery, Pacific County, Washington State.

The news report from the San Francisco Chronicle follows:
"Portland, Oregon, March 20: The British ship "Glenmorag", Captain Archibald Currie, from Callao, in ballast, for Portland, went ashore about 4 p.m. yesterday on the coast of Washington seven miles above Ilwaco in a dense fog. She sailed from Shields, August 15th, and arrived at Callao December 9th.

The first intimation of the wreck reached Ocean Park about 5 o'clock when one of the crew arrived at Mrs. Taylor's seeking assistance for his injured companions. The news spread to Nahcotta like wildfire and soon after a large number of residents made their way to the scene of the wreck, where they found the captain and crew, of whom two were killed and four injured.

The ship struck at about high water and now lies port side to the shore. From Captain Currie it is learned that the first indications of danger was the cry of "Breaker on port bow!" from the man on the lookout. He immediately attempted to wear around and almost succeeded when she struck and swung around, broadside on, with her head to the southward. The after port and starboard boats were cleared away and lowered, both reaching the water about the same time. The mate, who was in the lee boat, attempted to pull out to sea, but was forced to let her drift in shore. The boat which had been lowered on the weather side in rounding the stern was caught by a tremendous sea and dashed up under the ship's counter crushing the occupants in a cruel manner and smashing the boat considerably, the air-tight tanks with which she was provided alone keeping her afloat.

The captain next set about lowering the forward boat, and reached the shore in safety an hour later. On landing he discovered that two men had been killed and four injured.

The "Glenmorag" is an iron, full-rigged ship of 1567 tons register, and was built on the Clyde, Scotland in 1876. She is owned by R. & C. Allan who were also the owners of the Strathblane, which was wrecked near the same spot four years ago this month. Captain Curried had been in command of her the past nine years.

The "Glenmorag" was the last of the clipper ships built for the Allan Line, and was owned by R.S. and C.A. Allan of Glasgow. She was launched at Glasgow in 1876, was 255 feet long, 38 feet beam, and 22 feet deep, and of 1567 tons."

"Over the past 300 years, almost 2,000 vessels of all types and about 700 lives have been claimed by the treacherous waters off the Peninsula where the Glenmorag went down. In the days before GPS and cell phones, sailors sometimes had little idea where they were in relation to the shoreline, especially during raging winter storms that can last for weeks. Even when visibility was acceptable, ships often had trouble traversing the Columbia River bar, the area in which the gigantic flow of the river rushes headlong into towering ocean waves. Sailing ships had a terrible time getting into the Columbia, since the two natural channels through the broad, sediment-choked river mouth - particularly the north channel - forced ships to turn sideways to the wind and waves." The foregoing excerpt was taken from Shipwrecks, Graveyard of the Pacific, a website found at www.funbeach.com.

The Allan line funnels were red with a narrow white band below a black top.

  4. Charles GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (17.Edward3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 10 Apr 1853, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Charles, the second son of Edward and Ann, as of 1871 was working as a cooper's apprentice. He was, however, still living at home with his mother, Ann, a laundress, and his youngest sibling, Ann aged 16 who was working as a general servant. The family lived at 8 Thomas Square at that time. By 1881, however, Charles had taken up the family trade on the seas. During the time of the census of that year Charles was unmarried and working as a mate aboard the "William and George" at Whitstable. His fate following that time is unknown.

  5. Ann GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (17.Edward3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) b. 15 Mar 1855, Faversham, Kent, England; c. 10 Feb 1856, Faversham, Kent, England; d. 3 Oct 1921, Maidstone, Kent, England; bur. Maidstone, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Ann, the last child of Edward Gregory and Ann Ruck, was born 15 March 1855. Her life is somewhat of a mystery and she was never forthcoming with her children about family information.

Prior to her first marriage, Ann had had one daughter named Alice Jane who was christened at the Faversham Parish Church on 18 February 1876. Unfortunately, this little child died around the time she was 1 year old and her death is registered during the first quarter of 1877 at Faversham District.

She married for the first time, a man by the name of Henry Kearn on the 29th of July 1876 at the parish church of Faversham. None of her grandchildren knew of this marriage and it only came to light when her marriage certificate to Alfred Bodeker was received. Ann was shown on that latter certificate as being Ann Kearn, widow, father - Edward Gregory, mariner. What became of Henry Kearn is unknown and in light of this earlier marriage, it is also unknown if Ann's first child, Annie was Henry's or Alfred's natural daughter.

Although Ann was living with Alfred Bodeker as his wife by the time of the 1881 census, their marriage did not take place until 31 August 1890. It is possible that Henry Kearn, who had been an engine driver, deserted Ann, could not be found and subsequently had to be declared dead. At any rate, I have requisitioned the microfilm containing burials at the Faversham Parish Church for the applicable period and may find more answers there. In 1881 the family lived at 3 Gatefield Lane.

Between 1880 and 1893 Ann and Alfred had 7 more children. Edith Louise, born 4 September 1880; Minnie born during 1882; Rose born during 1885; Frederick born 25 October 1887; Ada Jane born 28 December 1889; and, Minnie Winnifred born 5 February 1893. Annie C., Minnie and Rose all died during 1886. It was not until a trip to visit with Dorothy Hardman and Edith Owlett during June 2003 that it came to light that their Lill was actually named Ada Jane. Up until that time, I had suspected that was the case as certainly there had never been a Lillian Gregory, Kearn or Bodeker registered at any time in the Faversham District. Unfortunately, though I had nothing to prove my suspicions. Edith Owlett suddenly revealed that her mother's name was actually Ada Jane entirely out of the blue. I was astonished and proclaimed my thanks to her for finally rectifying that piece of family history. Certainly during the 1891 and 1901 census Ada is living with the family - but no Lillian.

During 1891 the family continued to live at 33 Westgate Road in Faversham. Alfred was a labourer in the gun cotton works and the only children then living were Edith, aged 12, Frederick, aged 3 and Ada Jane, aged 2. At 32 Westgate Road was Ann's second cousin once removed, Charles Bunting and his wife, Fanny. Charles Bunting was the great-grandson of Thomas Nutt and Mary Herman, Ann's great-great-grandparents through her grandmother, Christian Gregory (nee Milsted). It is unknown what the relationship was like between Ann and her cousin. As the relationship was somewhat removed in time between Charles Bunting and Ann, it also makes me wonder if either of them was aware of their kindred bonds.

Alfred Bodeker eventually rose to the position of foreman at the gun cotton works. He was a rather confused and abusive sort and eventually deserted Ann around 1899. We are told that he had run off with a younger woman and certainly two entries in the Faversham parish registers bear this out: christened 8 August 1900 Alfred Heinrich Bodeker (G.R.O. June Qtr, 1899, Orsett, 4a, 578) and christened 26 May 1901 Hilda Mildred Bodeker (G.R.O. March Qtr 1901, Orsett, 4a, 649), the children of Alfred Bodeker and Charlotte Eliza Houseden. Curiously, his residence was given as being Stanford, Essex. The 1901 census shows Alfred and Charlotte and their two children living at 10 Fleet Street, Corringham, Essex. He was working as a foreman in the guncotton and explosive powder works. Living with them were two male boarders who had each been born in the U.S.A.. Hilda was shown as 2 months old at the time and Charlotte was shown as being 29 years of age and born in Faversham. A third child was found on the G.R.O. birth index - Charles William, June Qtr. 1902, Orsett, vol. 4a, page 653.

Family tradition recalls that Ann's eldest daughter used to make the most of opportunities to discredit Alfred in front of his new love or employees, ranging from name calling, kicking of shins, through to stamping on Charlotte's feet one day when Alfred and Charlotte were encountered walking together through town.

About 1903 Alfred was sent to South Africa to assist in the start up of a new gun cotton works. Word eventually came back to Ann that he had been killed there in an explosion. No one knows for certain that this is true. I have my doubts as a descendant of Alfred's brother still lives in Faversham today. She is Ella Epps, great-aunt of a lady, Ruth Bodeker (now Busbridge) who lives in New Zealand. All attempts at communication, prior to 2003, with these people failed miserably with Ella Epps more or less of the opinion that 'we' Bodeker descendants do not exist. This situation was rectified during 2003 with a contact made with Sandy Patterson. Sandy is also a descendant of Alfred's brother and more information concerning the Bodeker line can be found in the notes concerning Alfred and his family. Contact has also now been made with Ruth Busbridge in New Zealand.

Edith married in Faversham a man by the name of George Sharp and had taken up residence with her husband in the Chatham area, where during 1902 she gave birth to her only child, George Thomas Sharp. The family history of Edith and George during these few years, before they came to Canada are quite cloudy and more information will have to be gathered from Pamela Harrison, Edith's grand-daughter.

Ann, with family in tow, moved to Canada circa 1912 and settled in Toronto. Edith, George and their son also emigrated with Ann. The Sharps opened a fresh fish store on Davenport Road. Again, there is some cloud of confusion surrounding Ada Jane during this period. Family reports have it that Alice, Ada's first child was not Luke's daughter. She actually married Luke Owlett in Toronto during 1912.

Ada "Lill" and Luke eventually purchased a home at 251 Silverthorn Avenue where the entire family lived together for awhile. Minnie met Victor John Hill, her future husband, while riding the tram to work. She worked at Eaton's downtown and he was a conductor on that tram. Shortly before the outbreak of World War I Victor and Minnie's brother, Fred, purchased a small farm property in North York. Edith Owlett can recall one incident that happened when she was about 8 years old. Apparently the family was then living on Silverthorn and had come down very ill during the winter. Edith Owlett recalls looking up and down Silverthorn for any signs of activity as the weather was so dreadfully bad. She says that much to her great excitement and relief she recalls seeing Victor walking up the street and realized that he was probably coming to bring them the medicine that had been ordered by their doctor.

On March 13th, 1916 Frederick Bodeker enlisted for duty with the 198th Battalion. His description on enlistment indicates that he was 5'10-1/4" tall, had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair - traits that seem to run through the Gregory family consistently. He also had three distinctive tatoos on his right arm and eventually those aided in his identification at death. Fred shipped overseas aboard the 'Metagama' arriving in Liverpool, England on 17 April 1917. After serving briefly as acting Lieutenant his designation reverted back to Private. On 20 May 1917 he was stationed at Witley camp in Surrey, England not too far outside of Godalming. By May 27th he was assigned to the intelligence course and on 1 March 1918 landed in France. Fred was killed in action 28 August 1918 while serving with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was buried at Vis-en-Artois, France and decorated with the British War Medal and the Victory medal. Fred's death deeply affected his sisters. Minnie never accepted his death and for years attempted to find some evidence that he remained alive. Lill named her third child, who was born three months after Fred's death, in remembrance of the cemetary where he was buried - Matilda 'Artois' Owlett.

Ann returned to England with her daughter Edith and George Sharp circa 1917/18. Edith and George had became very disillusioned with life in Canada. Their store had suffered complete destruction in a fire and Edith was having great difficulty in understanding the Canadian currency system having been used to the pounds, shillings, pence system in use in England. At first, upon their return to England, Edith and George Sharp operated a public house in Chatham, Kent. by the time of Fred's death in 1918 their abode was the Rose Inn, Wheeler Street, Maidstone. No word had been heard from Edith's descendants from the time of her death during the 1950s until I (Susan) was able to finally track down Pamela Harrison (nee Sharp) during summer 2003.

For a time Lill and her daughters worked at Neilsen's chocolate factory in Toronto. Alice, Lill's eldest daughter, was gifted musically and spent many hours playing her violin at hospitals and hospices. Alice however, had a very tragic marriage and she felt as if she had been the cause of her baby's death. Alice turned away from the support of her family and eventually died as a result of years of alcohol abuse. Matilda, Tilly as she was known, died at the age of 55 unmarried. She too, had not had great success in finding a mate and after her last beau spurned her she took to eating nothing but wieners. Matilda died of cancer. I can remember visiting Silverthorn Avenue at least once during the severest part of Tilly's illness. I was about 7 years old but I can clearly remember that she was up in her bedroom and unable to come down. The adults, only, were allowed to go up to visit with her.

    Notes:
According to family sources, George William was apparently the only bad-tempered one of the entire family group. He ran away to sea when he was only 14. After his marriage to Emily they were both given to imbibing heavily. By the time their fourth child, George Alexander, was born, George William had become a publican. All of the children of George William had golden hair. Florence May had a child out of wedlock who goes by the name of George Gregory. She later married but no details are known. Winifred Mary also married and had two children: one, a daughter, Vera; and, the other unknown as to sex or name.

  11. Edward GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (19.George3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 5 Jun 1859, Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
When Edward was about 13, after his father's death, Edward had to go to work to help his mother look after the large family. Edward was about 5'8" tall, big-boned, with broad shoulders, physical traits that also seem to run through the Gregory family.

He was a cheerful, even-tempered, happy person. He had very little education and was sent to a Dames school where he learned to read, write and do some arithmetic. Later, he was sent to a Church of England school. However, neither school was free so after his father died he had to quit. Edward remained interested in reading and had many volumes of his own on history. At some time in his life he apprenticed as a fisherman and inherited the rights of his forefathers as a freeman and spent most of his life fishing on the oyster beds. His last ship was named the "Secret" and during the 1970s was mentioned in the Faversham paper as lying wrecked on the beach. The freemen and dredgers were sold out during 1922 as it became impossible to find anyone to serve as apprentice. The work was very hard and quite heavy, so much so that neither of Edward's sons took up the vocation of their father.

Edward used to bring home a coarse fish called 'Johnny Bullfish' just for the cats of the neighbourhood and the cats would all run to meet him. Edward was very fond of children and animals. he is remembered as having been a good father and used to take his daughter, Winifred, for walks on Sunday mornings. Edward was a regular at the Faversham parish church going at least once on Sunday. About 1903 the family moved to the Brents where they attended the Preston parish church. Although Edward could not sing, he is remembered as singing very loudly during church services. his working days generally began between 3:00 and 4:00 o'clock in the morning.

John and Winifred used to pester their father to take them fishing and one day he relented. That day the two children were very excited but spent most of the day seasick and were glad to set their feet back ashore. Edward's wife, Lydia, died about 1911. At that time, one of his sisters moved in with the family to look after the children. About 1925 Edward moved into an alms house. In his later years he became very heavy and in 1932, after three strokes, he died. During his last years Ada looked after him. Edward is also remember for his fondness of brown peppermints.

    Notes:
Emily's husband, Henry Jenkins was a farmer. One of their children had a son named John, who circa 1991-1992 was accused, tried and convicted of the murder of an ex-beauty queen in Canterbury. According to George Gregory (the grandson of Thomas Gregory and Emma Austin) this John Jenkins was a quiet, married farmer and he does not believe that John could have committed so dastardly a crime.

Edward Jenkins, Emily's oldest child, drowned about age 19 while he was trying to save a friend during the first World War, circa 1915 or 1916. Ada Jenkins, is reputed to have been a nice woman and married a farmer by the last name of White. Ada had one son and the family may have lived at Stalisfield near Charing. Nothing is known of George and Harry.

  13. Mary Christianna GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (19.George3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 5 Jul 1863, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Mary Christiana's husband, Jesse Last, was a builder by trade. This family was fairly well-to-do at one time and lived in quite a large home. Jesse Last was a great violinist and apparently the children drew their musical talent from him. Jesse also taught George Thomas' father to play the violin. By the 1930s, through correspondence between Roy Lumb's mother and the Lasts, it was reported that the family fortunes were "going downhill".

Of the children, Ethyl was a music teacher. She married three times, all soldiers and had a child by each husband. The fourth time Ethyl married she had two children. Her last husband committed suicide.

Christina, later known as "Chrissie", was a girlhood friend of her cousin Winifred (Roy Lumb's mother). She was still living in 1972 and was marked as being 73 years old on February 14.

Winifred died when she was just 14 and nothing is known of Sydney. Jesse was very musical and George was the youngest child.

Jesse and family moved first to Westgate, Thanet and owned a brickfield there. Sometime later, the family moved to "Mhow", All Saints Road, Margate, Kent.

    Notes:
John Charles used to work in the brickfields of Faversham with Jesse Last (see Mary Christiana Gregory). Apparently, John also boarded with the Last family for awhile. Later, he stayed with his brother's family (Edward and Lydia) and also with his other brother, Walter. John Charles died unmarried during the 1920s at Walter's home.

  15. Charles GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (19.George3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 11 Oct 1868, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Charles was a twin and was the sixth born child of George Gregory and Caroline Dodd. He became a skipper of a sailing vessel that often ventured to Europe and up to London. Roy Lumb's uncle, John, would sail with Charles from time to time. As a trick, John would dilute Charles' liquor but eventually Charles caught on to the rouse. Apparently Charles Gregory was a very likeable fellow.

  16. Walter Lynch GREGORY Descendancy chart to this point (19.George3, 4.Christian2, 1.John1) c. 11 Oct 1868, Preston-Faversham, Kent, England.

    Notes:
Walter, the twin of Charles, was the seventh child of George and Caroline. He married a woman by the name of Emma Sophia and had at least five children. Nothing is really known of this family except that Walter worked as a waterman and was a "grabber". It is believed that Walter has all of his uncle Edard's heirlooms.

    Notes:
Ernest marred and had three children. He died circa 1902 as a result of contracting Diptheria. At that time, Frank was sent to live with Roy Lum'bs mother's family. One of Ernest's two daughters died after contracting meningitis. Ernest, like his brother, Walter, worked as a waterman.

Ernest's son, Frank owned the 'Emma' which is still today moored at Hollow Shore about 1-1/2 miles from the Brents. Frank earned the nickname "Turp" (turpentine) but the circumstances for the moniker cannot be recalled. George Thomas reports that he had been sailing on the Emma many times throughout his life. Jim, Frank's son, now owns the vessel and keeps it immaculate.

By 1891 Edward and his family were living at Sandgate, Folkestone. Edward was no longer in the mariner's trade but, rather, working as a general labourer.
