Will of Edmund Austen of Adisham, 6 Nov 1582
IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the sixth day of November and in the 24th year of the reigne of our sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth et cetera I, EDMOND AWSTEN, of the parish of Adisham, in the County of Kent, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following:
First, I will my soul unto Almighty God trusting by the death and passion of my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ to have full remission and forgiveness of all my sins and my body I will to be buried in the churchyard of the parish church of Adisham beforesaid.
First, I will unto the poor of Adisham ten shillings.
Item, I will unto JOHN MAXSTED a year's dwelling in his house paying nothing for it but two pence towards the repair if it be demanded of my heirs.
Item, I unto THOMAS PEAKE a seam of wheat and a seam of malt.
Item, will to four to carry me to the church, eight shillings.
Item, I will unto Mother SANDAYE ten shillings.
Item, I will unto my wife's mother five pounds.
Item, I will unto AGNIS AUSTEN, my brother's daughter, twenty shillings.
All the residue of my goods, my debts being paid and my legacies performed, the one-half I will to RICHERDEN, my wife, and the other half to JANE AUSTEN, my daughter and to the child that my wife now goeth with.
Item, I will unto RICHARDEN, my wife, my house and lands and other buildings with all that JOHN MAXTYD dwellingth in and the lands thereunto pertaining and the eleven acres during her natural life and committing no waste and paying the Lord's rent and keeping necessary reparations. And after her decease I will it to the child that my wife now goeth with if it be a man child to him and to his heirs forever, and if it be a woman child then I will the eleven acres to my brother, ROBERT AUSTEN, and to his heirs forever paying thirty pounds of lawful money of England unto my child or children if there any then living. And I will the tenement that JOHN MAXSTED dwelleth in with all the lands thereunto apertaining to my brother THOMAS AUSTEN and to his heirs forever paying thirty pounds of lawful money of England unto my child or children if there be any then living.
Item, I will unto every one of my god children an ewe a piece provided also that if my wife die then I will that my brother THOMAS AUSTEN shall have the keeping of my child or children and their portion of goods putting in bond to insure them a gain which at the marriage or else at full age which shall first happen. And I make RICHARDEN, my wife, and THOMAS AUSTEN, my brother, my Executors and ROBERT AUSTEN, my brother, my Overseer provided further that if RICHARDEN my said wife and the child that she now goeth with.
Item, I will that ROBERT AUSTEN and JOHN AUSTEN, my brother THOMAS AUSTEN's sons, shall have twenty pounds a piece and my god-daughter ANNE AUSTEN five pounds of the goods that I have willed my wife.
IN WITNESS HEREOF I the said EDMOND AUSTEN have put my hand.
