      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the last day of July, Anno Domini 1595, I, JOHN RYGDEN, of the parish of Brooke within the County of Kent, yeoman, of good health of body and of perfect mind and memory (God be thanked therefore) doe make, ordain, declare and pronouce this to be my true last Will and Testament in manner and form as hereafter followeth, that is to say,

      First, I bequeath and yield my soul to almighty God my maker and creator hoping only to be saved through the death and precious blood sheeding of Jesus Christ my only saviour and Redeemer and by no other means whatsoever, And I will my body to be decently buried within the churchyard of Brooke aforesaid,

      And I will and give to the most needest and poorest impotent people of the said parish of Brooke ten shillings to be given and distributed in the day of my burial by the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.

      Also, I will and bequeath to the reparations of the parish church of Brooke aforesaid 6s 8d to be paid within one year next after my decease.

      Item, I will, give and bequeath to WILLMYNE my wife, one feather bed and a flock bed in the parlour, 2 feather bolsters, 2 pillowes of feathers, 2 pair of blanketts, 2 of my best coverletts and half my linen and half my brass and half of my pewter and the milke of one cow yearling during her life, to be kept and feed both winter and summer by my said Executors at their costes and charges upon those of my pastures and grounds that shall be next adjoining to my said dwelling house, the same cow to go and feed with my said Executors' keyne always.

      And also, I will that if the same cow shall chance to die then my said Executors shall appoint and allow her an other in her place and room as often as any such death, loss or mishap shall come.

      And also, I will that my said Executors shall yearly during her life sow, save, plow and harrow for my said wife (she finding the seed) one tolbett of hemp within the hemp land that is now there used at what place within the same hemp land as my said wife shall best like the same to be done at seasonable and best times.

      And also I will that my said Executors hereafter named shall deliver yearly during her life time two seams or quarters of good sweet and clean wheat, the one seam or quarter of wheat to be delivered at the feast of the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and the other quarter or seam at the Annunciation of our Lady St. Mary the Virgin at the first of those two feasts that shall first come next after my decease, the same payment and delivery to be made and so to continue as is aforesaid.

      And I will and give more to my said wife the one half of my fruit that shall yearly grow and be within the orchard belonging to my said house and half of the pigeons that shall be and increase within my said pigeon house during her life with free going and coming to the said pigeon house and orchard to take and to carry away the same so often as time shall require.

      And also, I will that my said Executors shall yearly during my said wife's life deliver near unto the hall door of my said dwelling house 6 good loads of firewood and the same to be there stacked and set to and for her use at their proper costs and charges, the same wood to be felled and had upon my said grounds,

      More I will, give and bequeath to my said wife my bedstedle and the testor to the same and curtains and hangings to the same standing in my parlour her to have the use and occupation thereof during her natural life and no longer.

      The residue of all my moveable goods, chanttels, and debts whatsoever it be (not before willed, tiven and disposed in this my said last Will and Testament) I will, give and bequeath the same to WILLIAM and JOHN RYGDEN, my two sons, with the said WILLIAM and JOHN, my sons, I do constitute, ordain and appoint to be my only Executors of this my last Will and Testament charging them to see this my last Will and Testament to be well and truely performed according to my true will and meaning.

      THIS IS THE LAST WILL and Testament of me the said JOHN RYGDEN, concerning the disposition of all my said lands and tenements.

      First, I will, give and bequeath to HENRY RYGDEN, my son, ten acres of land and wood, more or less, which I lately purchased of JOHN PROWDE, lying near Naccolt within the parish of Wye to be had and holden to the said HENRY RYGDEN, my son and to his heirs foever immediately after the decease of WYLLYMNE, my said wife, his mother and not before.

      Also, I will, give and bequeath to THOMAS RYGDEN, my son, my parcel of land called Carters Meade lying and being within thte parish of Brabourne which I lately purchased of Anthony Haull, to be had and holden to the said THOMAS RYGDEN, my son and to his heirs forever immediately after the decease of WYLLMYNE, my said wife, his mother, and not before.

      Also I will and give to GYLBERT RYGDEN, my son, one parcel ofland called Forde Meade lying and being within the parish of Brabourne aforesaid which I lately purchased of George Bolden to be had and holden to the said GYLBERT RYGDEN, my son and to his heirs forever immediately after my said wife's decease and not before.

      Also, I will, give and bequeath to AMY BRETT, my daughter, now the wife of GREGORY BRETT, ten shillings of good and lawful money of England and no more in consideration I have proferred her already in her marrying.

      Also, I will, give and bequeath to ELIZABETH RYGDEN my daughter forty pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid unto her the said ELIZABETH, my daughter, at her day of marriage.

      Also, I will, give and bequeath to MARGARET RYGDEN, my daughter, forty pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid to her the said MARGARET, my daughter, at her day of her marriage or at her age of twenty and two years which shall first come next after my decease.

      Also, I will that the said WYLLMYNE, my wife, shall have her dwelling in my parlour with the chimney and shall have the loft over the same parlour and the little buttery next the same parlour with free going and coming to the same during her life.

      And also I will that my said wife during her said life shall have free going and coming in to the hall, kitchen, bake house, oven well and wash house and hanging and drying for her clothes when and so often as need shall require.

      Also I will , give and bequeath to the said WYLLMYNE, my wife, all those lands and wood before willed, given and bequeath to HENRY RYGDEN, THOMAS RYGDEN and GYLBERT RYGDEN, my three sons, during her natural life without doing or permitting any strip or waste or felling of any wood or timber upon the same, but only for the making and fencing of the enclosures only, PROVIDED always and my will and meaning is that if the said WYLLMYNE, my wife, shall chance to marry at any time after my decease, then I will that the said WYLLMYNE, my said wife, shall lose and forgoe all the benefit before willed and given for her in this my Will as well of goods as of lands and then I will that my said Executors beforenamed shall pay and deliver to her twenty pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid unto her in the day of her marriage or within one month next after (being lawfully demanded).

      And more, I then will and give unto the said WYLLMYNE, my wife Iif she marry as is aforesaid) five pounds a year of good and lawful money of England issuing and going out of all my lands and tenements during her natural life the same shall half yearly to be paid to her by my Executors aforesaid. And for default of payment thereof or any part of parcel thereof at the days and times of payment thereof I will that my said wife or her assigns shall enter and distreyne in and upon any my said lands and tenements and the distress or distresses there so had and taken to withhold and detain according to law until she shall be saitsfied and paid her duties with her costs and charges.

      And further I will and my true meaning is that if my said wife do marry at any time after my decease, or die before my said three younger sons shall attain unto their several ages of twenty and two years, then I will that WYLLYAM RYGDEN and JOHN RYGDEN my two Executors shall have the profits and occupations of all their said three younger brothers parts of lands and woods by this my Will bequeathed to them and every one of them they doing no strip nor waste nor felling any woods and timber thereon but only for the hedges and enclosures until the said HENRY, THOMAS and GYLBERT, my said sons, sahll severally attain unto and be of their several ages of twenty and two years towards the fulfilling of this my Will.

      Also I will and give to the said WYLLYAM and JOHN RYGDEN, my said sons, my said mansion house whence in I now dwell with all other edifices and building whatsoever to the samd and the tenementes wherein one Halkes widow doth dwell and all other my lands whatsoever as well within the parishes of Brook, Brabourne and Wye aforesaid not before in this my Will willed and bequeathed to be had and holden to them and to their heirs forever.

      Also I will that if it shall fortune that any of my two sons WYLLYAM or JOHN do die without heirs of their bodies then I will the one of them to be the other's heir.

      And if they die both without heirs then I will that my son, HENRY, shall have all their said partes and portions as well of my goods and lands before willed then to be had and holden to him and to his heirs forever he then fulfilling and performing this my will as they should have done if they had lived.

      And also I will that if any of my three younger sons, HENRY, THOMAS and GYLBERT RYGDEN do die without heirs of their bodies then I will one of them to be each other's heir and I make and apoint my cousen RICHARD HALKE of Hastingleigh to be my overseer desiring him to be an aid and stay to my said wife and to my two Executors and younger children as I trust he will be and I give him for his labour and pains 6s 8d.
