      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the six day of July Anno Domini 1619 and in the seventeenth year of the reign of King James of England, etc., I, DAVID DENNE, of Well in the County of Kent, yeoman, being in good health and perfect remembrance thanks be unto Almighty God for the same, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, revoking all other Wills by me heretofore made:

      First, I bequeath my soul unto Almighty God hoping through the merits and precious death of his only son Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour to obtain full remission of my sins and to be partaker of his eternal kingdom:

      And my body to be buried in the church of Littleborne in or near the place where DAVID DENNE my father was buried:

      Item, I give towards the making of a stock to set the poor of Littleborne to work, five pounds to be ordered yearly according to the discretion of the churchwardens and the overseers of the poor of the foresaid parish of Littleborne for the time being, and I will that my Executors shall give unto ten of the poorest people in Littleborne at their discretion ten shillings.

      Item, I give and bequeath to ANNE my daughter the wife of THOMAS HUFFAM of Stourmouth the sum of twenty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto her within two years after my decease.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto JOHN my son the sum of fifty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto him within one year after my decease.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto AGNES my wife my lease and term of years which I have or shall have of and in Wellcourt where I now dwell with all the lands, meadows, seedings and pastures to the same belonging and I give also unto her my house in Littleborne Street with the appurtenances and all the lands there unto belonging (and the same to have and enter upon the Michaelmas next after my decease she allowing time to have and carry away, now in the tenure or occupation of Water Kempe or his assigns, she keeping of it in all things well and sufficiently repaired and amended from time to time, and not to sell any timber except it be to be used about the repairing of the said houses to have and to hold the same unto the said AGNES my wife for the term of her life in lien and recompense of her dower which she shall or may have or claim in any of my lands, tenements or hereditaments whatsoever, and I give unto her four of my best keene, four horse beasts whereof two of them to be of my wagon horse, two hogs, two sows and two leyware and the third part of my household stuff being indifferently gifted she making the first choice and all the fire wood which I shall have at the time of my death and of all manner of corn as much as shall be needful to sow the land of the farm I now dwell in if it be there to be had and five quarters of wheat to keep her house.

      This is the last Will and Testament of me the said DAVID DENNE made the day and year first above written touching the disposition of all my lands, tenements, hereditaments, leases and chattels real whatsoever:

      First concerning my lease and term of years which I have of the moiety of the manor of Littleborne in the County of Kent with all houses, barns, stables and other buildings, arable lands, meadows, seedings and pastures unto the said manor belonging together with the water mill there and of meadows, seedings and pastures thereto appertaining with certain rent corn yearly to be taken of certain tenants there, commonly called dottland barley, and also of one piece of marsh ground lying in Fordwich valley in the said County with all the tithe corn arising and coming of the demesne lands of the said manor with all and singular their appurtenances, in accomplishment and performance of certain articles indented bearing date the ninth day of August in the year of the reign of our sovereign Lord King James of England, etc., the fifteenth and of Scotland the one and fiftieth, made between me and DAVID DENNE my eldest son of the one part and Edward Emptage of the parish of St. Nicholas at Wade in the Isle of Thanet in the said County, yeoman, of the other part, I give and bequeath my said lease and term of years and all my estate and interest of and in the said manor of Littleborne and all other the premises unto JOHN and GEORGE my sons to have and to hold the same unto them, their Executors and Administrators in trust and confidence to the intents and purposes hereafter in this my Will mentioned and expressed, that is to say;

      That they shall have, receive and take all the issues and profits thereof until the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel next ensuing after my decease and to have, hold and possess the barns, yards, foddering places, lodges, ponds and other easements and commodities of the premises to lay their corn in and to fodder and spend their straw out until the feast day of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist next ensuing after the said feast of St. Michael the Archangel with free egress and regress into the same barns, yards and other the premises, and that from and after the said feast of St. Michael the Archangel next ensuing after my decease, the said DAVID DENNE my son, his Executors, Administrators and assigns, may have, hold and possess the said moiety of the said manor and other the premises, except the use of the bars, yards, foddering places, lodges, ponds and other easements and commodities of the premises as aforesaid and during only the time aforesaid, by and during all the residue of the said term then to come of and in the same PROVIDED ALWAYS, my will and meaning is that if the said DAVID DENNE my son fortune to die leaving a son or more sons of his body lawfully begotten under the age of one and twenty years that then the said JOHN and GEORGE my sons shall permit and suffer my said Executors to have, receive and take all the issues and profits of the said moiety of the said manor and other the premises with their appurtenances until the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel next after such time as the eldest son or other next son of the said DAVID DENNE my son shall obtain and come to his age of four and twenty years and no longer, with the use of the barns, yards and other commodities as is aforesaid and with free egress and regress until midsummer as aforesaid And if the said DAVID DENNE my son shall fortune to die without issue or without issue male or that his issue male die without issue male that then the said JOHN and GEORGE my sons shall have, hold and possess the said moiety of the said manor and other the premises with their appurtenances during all the residue of the said term then to come, of and in the same, and further my will and meaning is that the said JOHN and GEORGE my sons, their Executors or Administrators together with such other person or persons as shall have the right and interest of the other moiety of the said manor and other the premises shall and may at any time or times hereafter when they shall think it fit and convenient surrender the said term and interest of and in the said manor and other the premises into the hands of the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury to whom the reversion of the premises shall appertain and take a new lease of the said manor and other the premises with their appurtenances for lives or years as they shall think good to take the same, and that all and every such new lease and leases so to be taken shall be as to the moiety of the said manor and other the premises in trust and confidence as aforesaid to the intents and purposes before mentioned and expressed,

      Item, I give unto THOMAS my son my house in Littlebourne Street aforesaid and all the lands thereunto belonging, to have and to hold the same from and after the decease of the said AGNES my wife, unto him the said THOMAS and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten. And for default of such heirs of his body the remainder thereof unto HENRY my son and to his heirs forever.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto GEORGE my son my farm of Highsted in the parish of Chislett with all the lands, meadows, feedings, pastures to the same belonging which I hold by lease from the Dean and Chapter of Christchurch Canterbury, to have and to hold the same unto him, his Executors and Administrators during all the term of years therein to come and unexpired yielding and paying yearly out of the same unto JONAS my son and to his heirs ** half yearly to be paid by equal portions the sum of fifteen pounds of lawful money of England during the terms of the said leases or within twenty days after any of the feasts of our Lady the Virgin and St. Michael the Archangel and for default of payment thereof it shall be lawful for the said JONAS my son to distrain the farm aforesaid called Highsted or any part thereof for the same, And my will and meaning is that at any time when GEORGE my son shall renew his original lease of Highsted from the Dean and Chapter of Christchurch Canterbury that then JONAS my son shall bear and pay the third part of the charges for the renewing of the same, and if he shall refuse to pay as aforesaid the third part then my will is that his estate or interest of fifteen pounds a year of lawful money of England shall cease and be utterly void and of no affect PROVIDED ALWAYS and my will and meaning is that if GEORGE my son shall pay or cause to be paid unto the said JONAS my son one hundred and twenty pounds of lawful money of England at one entire payment within ten years after GEORGE my son shall come to have the state and possession of the said lease of Highsted, that then the estate and interest of the said JONAS of and in the said farm of Highsted and other the premises shall cease and determine and the whole interest therein shall remain unto the said GEORGE my son, his Executors and Administrators.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto VALENTYNE my son my lease and term of Chislett salts in the said parish of Chislett aforesaid and also my lease term of certain marshland in Wickham Brokes [sic: Wickhambreaux?] to have and to hold the same several leases and terms unto the said VALENTYNE, his Executors and Administrators during all the term of years therein to come and unexpired.

      Item, I give unto HENRY my son at his age of four and twenty years fifty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid him by my Executors, my meaning is that AGNES my wife shall bring him up the said HENRY my son until he shall attain unto the age aforesaid finding him all manner of necessaries as meat, drink and apparel.

      Item, my will and meaning is notwithstanding anything before written that my Executors shall have, receive and take out of my lands and leases before bequeathed all the profits yearly that shall arise and come of them until my debts and legacies shall be fully paid and discharged (my lease of Littleborne Court, and my lease of Wellcourt which I have given to my wife only excepted, my will is that if DAVID my son shall die before his son or sons shall come to the age of one and twenty years than then JOHN and GEORGE my sons shall pay unto him or them the sum of twenty pounds a year towards their bringing up until any one of them, that is the eldest, shall come to the age of four and twenty years).

      The residue of my goods and chattels personal I leave unto my Executors towards the payment of my debts and legacies and towards the bringing up of my youngest son to school and I do ordain and appoint my loving son-in-law HENRY AUSTEN of Adisham, DAVID DENNE and VALENTYNE DENNE my sons to be the Executors of this my last Will and Testament and my brother THOMAS DENNE and my brother JOHN DENNE overseers.

      In witness whereof I subscribed my name and set to my seal the twelfth day of July 1619.

      A Codicil annexed unto this Will the seventh day of April Anno Domini 1620

      Item my will and meanings is that DAVID DENN my son shall pay unto HENRY DENN my son the sum of ten pounds a year during the term of eight years next after my decease towards his maintenance in learning and to pay unto the said HENRY fifty pounds if he live to attain the age of four and twenty years if the said DVAID DENNE do so long life.

      Item, my further will and meaning is that the said DVAID DENNE my son shall pay unto THOMAS DENNE my son the sum of twenty pounds if he live to attain unto the age of four and twenty years if the aid DVAID DENNE do so long live.

      In consideration whereof I do forgive and discharge the said DVAID DENNE my son of all other debts and demands whatsoever due unto me until the day of the date hereof.

      Item, my further will and meaning is that if the said DAVID my son shall die before that the said HENRY and THOMAS my sons shall attain their several ages of four and twenty years then my will and meaning is that JOHN and GEORGE my sons shall pay them their portions above limited which my son DAVID should have done if he had lived.

      Probate made of the within Will of DAVID DENNE, Sr., while he lived of Well in the parish of Ickham [sic], County of Kent, deceased, by the lawful oaths of HENRY AUSTEN, DAVID DENN and VALENTINE DENN, Executors named in the Will, having been sworn faithfully to perform the same with a reserve to the other Executors. William Walsall, Clerk, Surrogate, etc.


      **Three lines were blotted out in the Will as follows: "Provided always and my will and meaning is that GEORGE my son shall pay of cause to be paid the sum of thirteen pounds and eight shillings and four pence of lawful money of England, half yearly to be paid [illegible number of words] during all the term of years thereunto [illegible number of words]" noted in the margin as follows: "all this was blotted by my own hand.
