      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the ninth day of August 1597 in the nine and thirtieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God Queen of England, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith, etc., I, EDMUND BAKER, of Bredmer in the parish Folkestone in the county of Kent, being sick in my body at God's pleasure, but whole and sound of my remembrance thanks be to God, do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following;

      First and principally I bequeath my soul unto the hands of Almighty God my maker and to Jesus Christ my alone and only redeemer by whose precious bloodshedding I believe most steadfastly to be saved and to the Holy Ghost my only sanctifier, and my body I will to the earth from whence it came.

      Item, I give to the poor people of Folkestone aforesaid two shillings to be paid by my Executor.

      Item, I give and bequeath to EDMOND EDWARDS and THOMAS MAIECK my godchildren either of them twelve pence.

      Item, I give unto AGNES BAKER my daughter my two yearling heifers colour brown goare and my great brass pot.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto ALICE my daughter twenty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto her by my Executor when she shall accomplish the age of one and twenty years or at the day of her marriage which shall first happen.

      The residue of all my moveable goods and chattels whatsoever my debts, legacies and other charges discharged, I give and bequeath wholly to ALICE my wife whom I make ordain and appoint sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament.

      THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me the said EDMOND BAKER made the day and year first above written, concerning all my houses and lands which I have in the parish of Folkestone aforesaid or elsewhere in the County of Kent.

      First, I will and bequeath all my houses and lands to ALICE my wife during the term of her natural life, And after her decease I will, give and bequeath my said houses and lands to AGNES BAKER my daughter and to her heirs forever in fee simple, So as she pay or cause to be paid to ALICE my daughter within three years next after the death of the said ALICE my wife the sum of ten pounds of lawful money of England And if the said ten pounds be not paid unto her in such manner and form and within such time as is before limited, then I will and my true meaning is that the said ALICE my daughter shall enter into one parcel of my land called Uppingswell Meadow containing by estimation one acre and one half lying next the park of Folkestone aforesaid to the park aforesaid east and north and the highway west and north and the same to have and enjoy to her and her heirs forever in fee simple anything in this my present Will mentioned to the contrary notwithstanding.

      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, in the year of our lord God a thousand five hundred fifty-seven and the 24th day of January, I THOMAS BAKAR [sic] of Folkestone, Jurat, being of whole and perfect mind and remembrance thanks be unto God but sick in body do make, ordain and constitute this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following,

      First and principally I bequeath my soul into the hands of almighty God and Jesus Christ his son by whose merits and passion I trust only to be saved and my body to be buried in the churchyard of Folkestone.

      Item, I bequeath at my fourth fare 10 shillings to be bestowed by mine Executors to the poor people. And also as much at my month's mind.

      Item, I will and bequeath to my son THOMAS BAKAR my silver salt, my best gown, my great spit, my great brass pot.

      Item, I bequeath to my son LEONARD 6 silver spoons, a furred gown, 2 slewe saynes, 1 fayre of shotte nettes, a sprotte nette.

      Item, I will to my son RICHARD 6 silver spoons if he live and come to the age of 28 years, if he die to be and remain to my sons THOMAS and LEONARD between them.

      Item, I will by daughter ALYCE my chest which was her mother's wedding chest and her mother's harnest girdle, a featherbed, an hanging bed of white, a stained bed with coverlettes and blankets belonging thereto.

      Item, I will to my daughter ELIZABETH my great chest, an hanging bed in the parlour, a stained bed with the featherbed transers and pillows longing thereto.

      Item, I will to the said ELIZABETH and ALYCE all my sheets to be equally divided between them and all my brass and pewter unwilled.

      Item, I will to my daughter JOHAN my bay mare and to WILLIAM TYBOLL her husband my wain and plough curt and all irons longing thereto.

      Item, I will to my sister LATTER a flock bed, a transor and a new frock of russet to be given her immediately after my decease by mine Executors.

      Item, I will to my godson JOHN TYBOLL my black steer and to RAFE BAKAR my godson my red steer. And JAMES BAKAR my godson my coat and RYCHARD LATER my godson my cloke. And to RICHARD BAKAR my son my worsted jacket and my dublet. And to every other godson I have 8 pence and to every god daughter 4 pence.

      Item, I will my bullocks to be sold by mine Executors and my gray mare and one cowe to be sold to discharge my debts and bequests.

      Item, I will to JOHAN my wife all the moveable goods I had with her in marriage and I will to her one seam of malt now a making at Metfords [space left blank] bushell of tares.

      Item, I will to her more one cow, 2 hoggs fat and all my wood and all my fish I have in store and an narnest girdle, a pair of silver hoks, a gown and my part of the wheat now sowen which I have with Master Hunt.

      The residue of my moveables unbequeathed my debts and bequests performed and fulfilled I give to mine Executors equally to be divided between them.

      And I make and ordain my son THOMAS BAKAR and LEONARD mine Executors for this my last Will and Testament.

      THIS IS THE LAST WILL as touching to the disposition of all my lands and tenements within the parish of Folkestone, I give and bequeath them to my sons THOMAS BAKAR, LEONARD BAKER and RICHARD BAKAR equally to be divied and shifted among them to them, their heirs and assigns forever, Except one barn and garden which I bought of Master Lambert which I givve and bequeath to my son THOMAS BAKAR to him, his heirs and assigns in fee simple forever he paying JOHAN my wife 20 shillings a year during her life natural.

      Item, I give my lodge to my son RICHARD, his heirs and assigns forever.

      PROVED So the testament was on the nineteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and fifty-seventh by the oaths of Thomas HUMPHREY and CHRISTOFRY HOCLAND witnesses and approved etc. Every execution has been entrusted to the same executors etc. oaths etc.
