      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the one and twentieth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred fiftie four, I, JOHN PORDAGE, of the parish of Ospringe, in the County of Kent, being sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance I humbly thank my god therefore doe make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following,

      First and above all I bequeath my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker and redeemer, trusting through the merritts and bitter passions of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to be partakers of the everlasting joys of heaven and my body to the earth from whence it came decently to be interred by my Executors hereafter named,

      Item, I give and bequeath to the poor of the parish of Ospringe wherein I now do dwell the sum of twenty shillings to be paid to them by my Executor hereafter named within six months next after my decease,

      Item, I do give to Master Carter the Minister of Ospringe twenty shillings to permit and suffer Mr. Platt the Minister of Graveney to preach my funeral Sermon whom I desire should take the paines to do the same.

      Item, I do give and bequeath to the said Mr. Plott to preach my funeral Sermon the sum of twenty shillings.

      Item, I give to MARY HILLES my Servant maid which now liveth with me the sum of twenty shillings to be paid to her within six months next after my decease.

      Item, I give and bequeath to ELIZABETH my loving wife the best bed, bedsteed and furniture with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging now standing in my best Chamber which I brought from Copton, four pair of sheets, two pillows, four pair of pillow beers, one dozen of napkins, six table cloathes, one dozen of pewter platters, four wrought stools, two chaires, three chests, one half headed bedsteed with a bed and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging.

      Item, I give and bequeath to my brother ROBERT PORDAGE my best suite and cloake to be delivered to him by my Executor hereafter named.

      The residue of my apparell to be disposed of by my Executor hereafter named to my brothers and sisters children as to them shall seem expedient.

      Item as touching and concerning the lands and tenements which God of his great goodness hath endowed me withal, I give unto ELIZABETH my loving wife one annuity of thirty pounds by the year issuing out of my messuage and tenement in the said County of Kent to hold to her and her assigns during her natural life to be paid to her at four the most usual feasts or terms in the year, that is to say, the fest of Saint Michael the Archangel, the feast of the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the fest of the annunciation of our blessed Lady St. Mary the Virgin and the feast of Saint John the Baptist by even and equal portions with power to distraine upon all or any part of my said land for non-payment of the same. The first payment whereof to begin at the first of the feasts aforesaid which shall first happen next after my decease and not before provided always that my said wife release to my Executor her former jointure or condition of jointure or other security by me to her formerly made in any manner of ways whatsoever.

      Item, I give to my loving and good father FRANCIS PORDAGE one annuity or yearly rent of eight pounds issuing out of my lands and tenements whatsoever to hold to him and his assigns during his natural life payable at the foresaid four usual feasts and terms in the year before in this my Will limited and expressed for the payment of the annuity of thirty pounds by the year to ELIZABETH my said loving wife with power of distress for non-payment of the same, PROVIDED that my said father do give and equally divide all the moveable goods and household stuff now being in the house I live in between my two daughters MARGARET and FRANCES PORDAGE eqully between them to be divided.

      Item, my will and meaning is that if ELIZABETH my said wife shall after my decease intermarry then she shall have but one annuity of twenty pounds by the year issuing out of my land as aforesaid payable as is before expressed.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto ROBERT FREEBODY the son of my son-in-law ROBERT FREEBODY the sum of twenty shillings. And to JOHN HULK the son of my son-in-law CHARLES HULKE the like sum of twenty shillings.

      And lastly I do constitute and ordain my two daughters MARGARET and FRANCES PORDAGE myt full and whole Executrices of this my last Will and Testament unto whom I do give all my messuage, land and tenements, retn charge and annuity whatsoever to hold to them and their heirs forever.

      And the residue of my person estate not hereby devised after my debts paid and my funeral expence discharged I give and bequeath unto my said two daughters MARGARET and FRANCES PORDAGE forever.

      And I do entreat my loving brother THOMAS PORDAGE and my loving brother-in-law, JOHN KNOWLER, to be Overseers of this my last Will and Testament and to direct and assist my said Executrixes in the due performance of this my last Will and management of my estate for their advantage.

      And I request my said daughters whom I have made my Executors to take advice from them for doing of the same.

      IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.

      THIS WILL WAS PROVED AT WESTMINSTER the ninth day of the month of October in the year of our Lord God according to the common computation of the Church of England one thousand six hundred fifty four before the Judges for probate of Wills and granting Administrations lawfully authorized by the oaths of MARGARET and FRANCES PORDAGE, the daughters of the said deceased and joint Executrices named in the same Will, to whom was committed the administration of all and singuler the goods, chattles and debts of the said deceased according to the tenor and affect of the last Will and Testament of the said deceased, they being first sworn by commission truly to administer the same.
