  Our Thomas Nutt, Senior was born circa 1745, based on the age recorded on his burial. He married Mary Herman on 21 October 1770 at Faversham after publication of banns. Thomas was described as being "of Faversham" but no christening for him appears in any of the church registers. There is no direct evidence of Thomas' occupation however I suspect that he was somehow involved in the fishing industry. His sons were variously a fisherman, dredger, and mariner. During 1757 an Edward Nutt was assessed as both owner and occupier of property on Court and Abbey Streets in Faversham. Unfortunately, there is an almost 20-year gap in the land tax assessments between 1762 and 1780 so it is impossible to determine from that source if a later assessment included this Edward Nutt or if the property that he had occupied eventually flowed through to our Thomas. Similarly, an Ann Nutt married a Thomas Allen during 1779 at Faversham. All of the known children of that couple were christened at Selling, the native parish of Thomas Allen. This Ann was born circa 1759 and could possibly be the daughter of the unidentified John Nutt. Alternatively, she may be a younger sister of our Thomas Nutt, senior. The next assessment in Faversham is that of Thomas Nutt as tenant of Richard Pratt during the years 1780 through 1782. As of 30 May 1783, however, Thomas has purchased property which he continued to own and occupy through 1793. There was also a John Nutt who was buried at Faversham during 1788 at the age of 59 years (bc 1729). It is quite possible that John was an uncle or older brother of our Thomas, Senior. Again, no christening has been found in Faversham or neighbouring parishes for John. Thomas, Senior, rented a large tract of property in Ospringe between 1790 and 1794 from the Earl of Guildford. That property was assessed at GB32 per year and must have been some form of warehouse operation. Again, a gap in the land tax assessment records occurrs from 1793 to 1831. From the manorial records for the manor of Faversham in 1802 Thomas Nutt appeared before the court to bring his tenure of manorial holdings into good standing. He was recorded as being both owner and occupier since 1782 of a messuage and premises in Abbey Street East in the town. Occupiers of adjacent property, two on Abbey Street and two in Court Street "or the passage behind" were recorded as James Nutt, Matthew Harmon, John Harmon and Willson Stephen Admans. James Nutt we know is the son of Thomas. Matthew and John Harmon are also related by marriage as brothers-in-law of Thomas Nutt. I have not, however, determined any relationship between the Admans fellow and either the Harmon or Nutt families. The further good standing of Thomas Nutt and his son, Thomas, is evidenced by the fact that both were nominated as burgesses of Faversham and appear on the burgess rolls from 1837 through 1840. As a burgess of the town both Thomas, Senior and Thomas, Junior were free men and therefor entitled to vote. The rated property which qualified both of them as burgesses was located on Abbey Street. A brief note appeared in the manorial court records during 1839, 1840 and 1843 indicating that a John Pay was purchaser of the holdings of Thomas Nutt, Senior. Unfortunately, the entries in 1839 and 1840 were only very brief and no further details were provided. A full entry was recorded in the court during 1841 so it is quite curious why mention needed to be made again during 1843 of the transaction. From the files of Arthur Percival, M.B.E., M.A. D.Litt., F.S.A., of the Faversham Fleur de-lis Heritage Centre, the following information was received by letter dated 1 September 2000 addressed to Janet M. Epps, (a copy of which was forwarded to me by Janet), concerning this Thomas Nutt: "Thomas Nutt (1745-1839) paid a rate on a house on the east side of Abbey Street on 20 December 1785. He was also a party to a lease (April 1782) which related to 93-94 Abbey Street and 11-12 Oyster Court (at the rear of 93-4). Whether he actually lived in any of these I cannot say, but the probability is that he lived at either 93 or 94 Abbey Street - one of them, at least, a medieval timber-framed building which still survives. He was a dredger (ie oyster dredger) according to a 1794 directory. Bequests to: Margaret Wilkins, daughter of George Wilkins, gent, deceased; Edward Alexander and Jane Alexander, son and daughter of Edward Alexander deceased, the testarix's cousin; Mr Lee, minister of St Mildred's church; Katherine and Elizabeth Smith, the testatrix's kinswomen and William Smith, their brother; John Polhill and Thomas Polhill, sons of John Polhill, esq, the testatrix's cousins; Mr William Somner, the testatrix's 'very loving friend'; Thomas Courthop, the testatrix's friend; William Courthop, son of Thomas Courthop; Margaret Bossell, wife of - Bossell [blank in document] of St Dunstan's, Canterbury; John Nutt and Thomas Stonestreet, the testatrix's cousins; Judith Rucke, wife of Laurence Rucke. Bequests are of money, rings and lands in Wye and Brook in the names of Thomas Courthop, William Somner and Edward Pyard, gent. Provision for distribution of money to the poor. She appoints William Somner her executor. The codicil revokes the legacies to Edward and Jane Alexander and leaves a bequest to Jane Alexander, their mother.
