R E Kelly
MD, FRCP
Reggie, as he was affectionately known, was a skilled diagnostician, but his greatest asset in clinical medicine was his ability to communicate with patients, a skill he taught by example at the beside and in outpatients to many generations of students and junior staff. Neurology is a daunting subject to many students, but he had the gift of being able to put difficult concepts into simple language that everyone could understand. His warm personality also enabled him to support and encourage patients, often over many years, in their battle with disabling and progressive neurological illnesses. His massive physical presence inspired confidence and he was unfailingly good humoured with a great zest for life, a characteristic chuckle and laughter never being far away.
These qualities were brought to bear in his administrative duties. He was dean of the Institute of Neurology 1968-75, a time when the basic science departments were being expanded, and he was also chairman of the medical staff committees of both St. Thomas's and the National Hospitals. Research wasn't neglected; he wrote several important papers and encouraged and supported generations of registrars in a wide variety of research projects. He was particularly interested in multiple sclerosis and was a tireless and enthusiastic chairman of the medical research advisory committee of the Multiple Research Society from 1974 to 1989.
Reggie received tremendous support from his wife Peggy, who was a generous hostess, travelled extensively with him, and shared his love of sailing. Sue survives him with their four children. - PCG-S.
