      Will of George Rucke of Crundale, yeoman, 12 January 1654/55 O.S.


      IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, the twelfth [12th] day of January in the year of our Lord God one thousand, six hundred fifty and four [1654/55] I, GEORGE RUCKE, of the parish of Crundale in the County of Kent, yeoman, being sick in body but of good and perfect memory praised be God therefore, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament revoking and annulling by these presents all other Wills heretofore by me made and thereby void or vexting.

      First I resign up my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping to obtain eternal salvation by the merits of Jesus Christ my redeemer and I commit my body to the earth to be decently buried in the church of churchyard of Crundale above mentioned at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named and as for those goods and personal estate which God hath in great mercy lent me,

      First, I give to the poor of the said parish of Crundale where I live the sum of twenty shillings [20] of current English money to be disposed of by my Executor hereafter named and the Minister and by them to be distributed amongst the poor there as they shall think fit within two [2] months after my decease.

      Item I give to the poor of the parish of Godmersham where I have some lands lying ten [10] shillings of like money to be disposed of by my Executor hereafter named and the churchwardens there and by them at their discretion to be distributed within two [2] months after my decease.

      Item I give and bequeath to my godchildren, EDWARD ELLIS and GEORGE CARTER, the Elder, the two daughters of WILLIAM PANTREY and JOHN PANTREY, SUSANNA and ELIZABETH, ten [10] shillings a piece of lawful money of England to be paid at their several ages of one and twenty years [21].

      Item, I give to my brother EDWARD RUCKE and also to my sisters SUSANNA PANTREY and MARGARET ELLIS, ten shillings a piece of lawful English money.

      Item I desire a sermon may be preached at my burial by some learned Minister to be entreated by my Executor and I give him fifteen [15] shillings for his pains therein to be taken.

      Item I give to the four children of my daughter, MARTHA, lately the wife of JOHN PANTREY but now the wife of WILLIAM ANDREWS, to each of them ten [10] shillings of current money of England to be paid to them at there several ages of one and twenty [21] years and to the seven children now living of my daughter MARY the wife of HENRY DOWNE the sum of seven pounds [£7] of lawful English money equally to be divided amongst them and to be paid unto them at their several ages of one and twenty [21] years and my will and true meaning is that if any of the said children of other of my said daughters happen to die before the said age of one and twenty [21] years that then the portion or the portions of the deceased shall remain unto my Executor hereafter named.

      Item I give unto my daughter the wife of THOMAS CRUX twenty [20] shillings of lawful English money to be paid unto her within six [6] months after my decease.

      Item I give unto ELIZABETH CRUX my grandchild the sum of ten [10] shillings to be paid her at the age of one and twenty years [21].

      Item I give unto my dearly beloved wife, ELIZABETH, the one half of my household stuff.

      Item I give and bequeath unto my said wife, ELIZABETH RUCKE, the sum of ten [£10] pounds by the year half-yearly to be paid by equal portions during the time of her natural life the first payment to begin at the feast of St. Michael the Archangel or the Annunciation of our Lady which shall first happen after my decease, which said sum to be paid to my said wife shall be issued and paid out of my Executors lands lying in the parish of Wye at a place called Nackolt lately bought of William Harrison, Gent and I doubt not but my said wife will kindly an opt of the same and also what is given unto her, my said wife, in a deed bearing date the fourth [4th] day of October in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred fifty and two [1652] in full of her dower which if she shall refuse to do or shall after my decease challenge or claim any dower or widow right out of any other of my lands or hereditaments that then the forementioned sum for and during her life to be paid out of my said Executor’s lands in Wye as also what is given unto her, the said ELIZABETH RUCKE, my said wife, in the aforementioned deed bearing date the fourth [4th] day of October in the year of our Lord God one thousand, six hundred fifty and two [1652] shall be void and null.

      And after the decease of my said wife I give and bequeath to my daughter, MARY the now wife of HENRY DOWNE (if the said Mary shall survive and overlive my said wife) the sum of six pounds [£6] yearly and every year during the natural life of the said MARY to be issuing out of my said Executor’s lands lying in Nackolt in the parish of Wye aforesaid or otherwise by my Executor to be paid half-yearly by even and equal portions, the first payment to begin at the feast of St. Michael the Archangel or the Annunciation of our Blessed Lady, which shall first happen after the death of my said wife, PROVIDED always and my will and true meaning is that if the said MARY, my daughter, or her assigns or the said HENRY DOWNE, her husband, or his heirs or assigns or any other person whatsoever claiming from by or under them or any of them, shall at any time hereafter challenge, claim or demand any dower wives’ portion, child part or portion in any of my estate real or personal moveable or immoveable or of my Executor as due to him or them by any promise or pretended promise for or in consideration of marriage solemnized between the said HENRY DOWNE and my said daughter MARY that then the above said six pounds [£6] by the year now by this my last Will and Testament given to my said daughter MARY as a legacy to be paid her by equal portions half-yearly after the decease of my said wife Elizabeth until the death of the said MARY shall be frustrate, void and null to all intents and purposes. In consideration of which said sum by my Executor to be paid and also for and in consideration of my fatherly care of his good and preferment I devise all my houses, lands, tenements and hereditaments whatsoever and wheresoever to me belonging and in present possession to my son WILLIAM RUCKE, my Executor to be had and holden to him and his heirs forever.

      Item I desire my cousin GEORGE CARTER and my cousin WILLIAM PANTREY to be assistant to my Executor with their advises or otherwise in the proving and execution of this my last Will and Testament and I do appoint that if they shall be occasioned to travel about the same that their charges shall be borne by my Executor and besides I give unto them ten [10] shillings a piece for their love, care and pains therein.

      All the rest and residue of my ready monies, goods, chattels, debts and personal estate whatsoever shall be after my decease and not formerly given and disposed of I give them all and every part thereof to my said son WILLIAM RUCKE he paying all my debts, legacies, funeral expenses and charges about the probate of this my last Will and Testament and all other charges and expenses which shall be needful and necessary about the same by any other way or means.

      Item I do constitute and appoint said son, WILLIAM RUCKE, sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament.

      This is the last Will and Testament of me, GEORGE RUCKE, consisting of two sheets of paper to both whereof I have set to my hand, and to this last my hand and seal dated the day and year first above written.
      Memorandum this word Executor was interlined in two places before the ensealing hereof.

      THIS WILL was proved at London the one and twentieth [21] day of March English style one thousand six hundred fifty four [1654] before the judges for probate of Wills and granting of administrations lawfully authorized by the oath of WILLIAM RUCKE the son and sole Executor named in the same Will to whom was committed administration of all the lands, goods, debts and chattels of the said deceased, he being first by commission sworn truly to administer.
