      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the tenth day of October in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred forty and two, I, HUE TILBYE, of Lenham, in the County of Kent, linen weaver, being weak of body yet of good and perfect memory praised b almighty God therefore, do make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following,

      Imprimis, I commend my soul unto almighty God who hath made me and all mankind.

      Item, I give and bequeath to ELIZABETH my dear and well beloved wife out of my dwelling house, barn and stall and also out of one little field together with the close, orchard, garden and one hempshott and out of all and every of them, their and every of their appurtenances in Lenham aforesaid, containing in the whole by estimation two acres and a half butting and bounding towards the land of Robert Doe, husbandman, towards the east, to the land late of Thomas Tilbye and now of Richard Clarke, linen weaver, towards the west to the heirs of William Held towards the south and to the common there called Roytons Heath towards the north, one annuity or rent charge of three pounds of lawful money of England to be paid every year at or in the said dwelling house at four feast days of the year, that is to say, at the feast of the Nativity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, at the Annunciation of the blessed Lady St Marie the virgin, at the Nativity of St John Baptist and at St Michael the Archangel by even and equal portions to have and to hold the said annuity or rent charge unto my said wife and to her assigns during her natural life if she continue so long a widow. But if my said wife happen to marry again then it is my full intent and meaning that the said annuity or rent charge shall for ever from the time of her said marriage cease and utterly become void. Nevertheless, in stead and lieu thereof I do give and bequeath unto my said wife and to her assigns during her natural life out of my said house and all other the premises aforesaid, one annuity or rent charge of forty shillings of current money of England to be paid at such times and place and in such manner and form to all intents and purposes as the said three pounds ought to have been paid in case my said wife had kept herself a widow. And if it shall happen that the said annuities or rent charges or either of them respectively as then shall become due and payable as aforesaid or any part of them or of either of them to be at any time behind and unpaid at the times and place before accounted and expressed for them or either of them to be paid, then it is my will and meaning that my said wife shall have full power to distrain upon all or any part of the premises for her satisfaction as often as need shall require. And I do hereby give unto my said wife as full power and authority so to do as possible I can.

      Item, I give and bequeath to my son THOMAS TILBYE and to his heirs my said dwelling house with the stall, barn, field, close, orchard, garden and hemp spot aforesaid and their and every of their appurtenances whatsoever to them or any of them appertaining or belonging paying only to my son GEORGE TILBYE out of them within one year next after the death of my said wife, five pounds of current money of England. And it is my will and meaning that my said son THOMAS shall give unto my said son GEORGE TILBYE his bond for the true payment of the said five pounds accordingly at any time upon the reasonable request of my said son GEORGE

      Item, I give and bequeath to my three youngest sons, LIBBEAS TILBYE, ROBERT TILBYE and JOHN TILBYE and their heirs forever two pieces of land in Lenham aforesaid whereof one piece is or hath been called or usually known by the name of Broome lands containing by estimation four acres and is now divided into two pieces, the other is or hath been called or usually known by the name of Edrich containing by estimation six acres now also divided into two parts or pieces which said two pieces of land called Broome lands and Edriche were given to me by the last Will and Testament of GEORGE TILBYE my father bearing date the three and twentieth day of September in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred and nine and do bound to the lands of James Clement, yeoman, and to the land of Laurence Foster, husbandman towards the east to the King's highway leading from Ashford to Lenham aforesaid, towards the south to the lands of the Right Honourable Katherin Lady Stannup, to the lands of Thomas Clarke, husbandman, and to the lands of Thomas Gorram towards the west and to the lands of the said James Clement and of Thomas Tilbye, husbandman, towards the north. Nevertheless, it is my full intent and meaning that my said sons LIBEAS AND ROBERT, their heirs and assigns shall pay out of their parts and profits of the said Broome lands and Edriche unto my said wife and to her assigns during her widowhood ten shillings a piece every year, that is to say, at every of the four feast days before in this my Will expressed, two shillings and six pence entirely every year and that then my said sons LIBBEAS and ROBERT shall within one month next after my decease enter into one or several bonds to her for their true payment thereof accordingly.

      Item, I do hereby declare my intent and meaning to be that my said wife shall receive and take my son JOHN his part of the rents and profits arising from and out of Broome lands and edriche aforesaid, until he shall attain to the age of eighteen years to her own use towards her curation of him and after my said son JOHN shall have attained to the said age of eighteen years that she shall receive the said rents and profits and keep them for my said son JOHN his use until he shall attain to the age of one and twenty years and then pay them to him and not before.

      Item, I give unto my son LIBBEAS TILBYE all my looms and all manner of tackling, tools, and implements whatsoever thereunto belonging or appertaining.

      Item, I give unto my said sons LIBBEAS TILBYE and ROBERT TILBYE five pounds a piece of current money of England to be paid to them within one month next after my decease and I give to my said son JOHN TILBYE five pounds of lawful English money at his age of one and twenty years. And it is my will and meaning that if my said wife do happen to marry before my said son JOHN attain to the said age of one and twenty years that then she shall pay the said five pounds within one month next after she shall so happen to marry to be my said son THOMAS to the intent that he may pay the same to my said son JOHN at his said age of one and twenty. And it is my desire that my said son JOHN may have some reasonable profit allowed unto him at his said age of one and twenty years by my said wife and son THOMAS or either of them respectively according to the time that their or either of them had the keeping of the said five pounds. And if my said son JOHN happen to depart this life before he attain to be one and twenty years of age then it is my intent and meaning that my said sons LIBBEAS and ROBERT or the survivor of them shall have the same equally betwixt them.

      Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter JUDETH TILBYE forty pounds of current money of England to be paid her within six months next after my decease or soever if my Executrix hereafter named can provide it for her.

      And I do hereby make and ordain ELIZABETH my well-beloved wife aforesaid sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament to whom I give the rest and residue of all my goods, chattels and personal estate whatsoever which I shall leave behind me at the time of my decease. And do hereby revoke all other Wills formerly made by me whatsoever.

      In the name of God amen the 23rd day of September the year of our Lord 1609, I George Tilbie of the parish of Lenham and in the Diocese of Canterbury being sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance thanks be to almighty God do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following:

      First I commit my soul into the hands of almighty God trusting assuredly by his mercy and by the passion and merits of our saviour Jesus Christ my only redeemer and advocate to attain the place of everlasting salvation.
      Item my body my soul departed to be buried in such place as shall seem good to them that shall see the doing therewith.
      Item I will that there shall be given at my burial unto the poor 3 shillings and 4 pence

      Item I give and bequeath unto Dorothie my Daughter thirty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid to her when she shall come to the age of eighteen years or day of marriage which shall first happen, and one chest to be paid to her by mine executor.
      Item I give and bequeath unto Susanne my daughter thirty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid to the said Susanne when she shall come to the age of eighteen years or day of marriage which shall first happen, and one chest to be paid to her by mine executor.
      And if either of them die before they come to age the one to be the others heir.

      The residue of all my moveable goods, my debts and legacies paid, I give and bequeath unto Susanne my wife except one joined bedstead standing in my parlour and also one table with the frame and one form standing in the hall and all such shelves as stand in the buttery. And also I do ordain and make Susanne my wife my sole executor to see this my last will and testament executed according to right & equity of conscience and I devise my brother Richard Tilbie to be my overseer.

      This is the last will and testament of George Tilbie of Lenham made and declared the day and year above written concerning the disposition of all my lands and tenements lying in Lenham and Westwell.

      First I will that Susanne my wife shall have the issues and profit of all my lands and tenements for the term of five years keeping the reparations and paying the Lords rent to bring up my children withal.

      And my will is that when five years are ended or after the decease of my wife which shall first happen that Thomas my son shall have the house which I now dwell in with the south end of the barn and with the ?hepp and close adjoining unto it and one orchard lying to the house with one piece of land containing one acre and one yard lying to the orchard and one meadow by estimation 2 acres adjoining unto Cuckoo? Lane and 2 pieces of land called Broome land by estimation 2 acres and a half and four pieces of land called woodland by estimation eleven acres paying out of it unto his mother three pounds by the year to be paid quarterly, that is to say, at the feast of St Michael and the nativity of our saviour Christ and at the Annunciation of the virgin Mary and at the nativity of St John the Baptist beginning at the feast which shall first happen.

      And also my will is that when five years are ended or after the decease of my wife which shall first happen that Hugh my son shall have my house which Harrison doth now dwell in with the stable and the stall and also the north end of the barn from the end of the house to the orchard and one close and the like house joining to the orchard and one Hemplott and one orchard and one field by estimation 2 acres & a half and also 2 piece of of land more called Broome lands by estimation 4 acres and also one piece of land more called Edrich by estimation 6 acres paying unto his mother 40 shillings by the year quarterly by even portions to be paid that is to say, at the feast of St Michael the Archangel else nativity of our saviour Christ and the Annunciation of the virgin Mary and the nativity of St John the Baptist beginning at the feast which shall first happen.

      And when five years are ended or after the decease of my wife which shall first happen I will that Robert my son shall have my house with a piece of land called Hamorth? and one piece of land called Wallingams? by estimation 3 acres and 3 yards of meadow lying in Barnes Meade & one piece of land called little barn land by estimation one acre & one yard and other 2 pieces of land lying in Westwell called Charewells by estimation 6 acres paying unto his mother 20 shillings by the year quarterly to be paid.

      The reference in George Tilbie's Will to the fact that Hugh is to make payments to "his mother" "Susanne" would indicate that Susanne was in fact the original wife of George and the natural mother of Hugh.
