      Will of Jane Fox widow of Ashford, made 3 Oct 1689, probated 30 Oct 1689.

      IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the third day of October in the first year of the reign of our sovereign Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King and Queen, defenders of the faith etc. Anno Domini 1689, I, JANE FOX, of Ashford, in the County of Kent, widow, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and memory thanks be rendered to almighty God for the same and considering the uncertainty of this life and that it is appointed for all men and women once to die do therefore revoke and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, and I do willingly and with a free heart render my soul into the hands of almighty God hoping through the death and passion of Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer to receive pardon and remission of all my sins and my body I commit to the earth from whence it came to be decently buried according to the discretion of my Executrix hereinafter named,

      And touching the estate with it hath pleased almighty God to bless me with all in this world I give and bequeath as followeth,

      Inprimis I give and bequeath unto my eldest son JOHN FOX the sum of twenty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto him within twelve months next after my decease but my will and meaning is that five pounds being parcel of the legacy given him by his Last Will and Testament of John Fox, my late husband, deceased, and therein appointed to be paid him within six months next after my decease shall be part of the said legacy of twenty pounds which I have herein given and bequeathed unto him my said son JOHN FOX.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto my son ROBERT FOX the sum of fifteen pounds of like money to be paid unto him within twelve months next after my decease but my will and meaning also is that five pounds being parcel of the legacy given him by the Will of the said JOHN FOX my said late husband, deceased, and therein appointed to be paid him within six months next after my decease shall be part of the said sum of fifteen pounds which I have herein given and bequeathed unto my said son ROBERT FOX.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter JANE the wife of RICHARD RUCKE of Elham, in the County aforesaid, yeoman, the sum of twenty pounds of like money to be paid unto her within twelve months next after my decease but my will and meanings also is that ten pounds being her legacy given unto her by the said Will of the said JOHN FOX, my said late husband, deceased, shall be part of the said sum of twenty pounds which I have herein given and bequeath unto my said daughter JANE.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter ANNE the wife of WILLIAM SMITH, of Ashford aforesaid, butcher, the sum of thirty pounds of like money but my will and meaning is that ten pounds being her legacy given her by the last Will of my said late husband JOHN FOX, deceased, shall be part of the said sum of thirty pounds which I have given and bequeathed unto her my said daughter ANNE.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto my two grand-daughters ANNE and ELIZABETH GLOVER the sum of five pounds a piece of like money to be paid unto them at their several ages of eighteen years.

      Item, I give and bequeath unto my three grandchildren WILLIAM, SUSAN and ROBERT, the children of my daughter JONE, deceased, late wife of [left blank] SUCKLIN, the sum of ten pounds of like money to be paid unto them at their several ages of eighteen years equally to be divided between them but my will and meaning is that five pounds mentioned to be given unto my said daughter JONE by the last Will of my late husband JOHN FOX, deceased, and the therein appointed to be paid unto her within six months next after my decease shall be part of the said sum of ten pounds which I have hereby given to be equally divided between my said last mentioned grandchildren. And my will and meaning is and I do hereby declare that if all or any of my legatees in this my last Will and Testament named shall disturb my Executrix in the probate of this my Will or shall seek for any further benefit or advantage by the said last Will of my said late husband JOHN FOX, deceased, otherwise or in any other

      manner then what I have mentioned and expressed in this my Will that then they all or any of them so doing shall have no benefit of this my Will and the legacy and legacies herein by me bequeathed unto them or any of them so doing shall remain in the hands of my Executrix for her own use and benefit and after my legacies and funeral expenses and debts if any be are paid and satisfied then whatsoever of my estate that shall remain over and above what I have given and bequeathed I give and bequeath the same unto my said daughter ANNE the wife of the said WILLIAM SMITH whom I make and ordain sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament willing and desiring all my said legatees to be content with the same.

      This is the last Will and Testament of me the said JANE FOX containing two sheets of paper whereunto I have set my hand and seal dated that day and year first in the first sheet first above written.
