Under the law of Scotland, the union of the couple was considered a legitimate marriage, yet the ceremony, itself, remained an unlawful act. Accordingly, the parties to an irregular marriage were liable to be prosecuted as soon as the Sheriff was able to serve them with a Warrant. It would appear from this marriage certificate that the Sheriff's Warrant was served almost immediately upon completion of the ceremony. To learn what penalties were imposed upon Robert and his bride further research would have to be carried out in the Sheriff's records in the archives at Edinburgh and the Sheriff's Court offices in Glasgow, Scotland.
