Notes |
- Mary secondly married Joseph Gallagher (born 22 May 1936 in Londonderry, Ireland and died 6 February 1998 in Niagara Falls, Ontario at Greater Niagara General Hospital of squamous cell carcinoma of the lungs). Apparently, the marriage took place in what was then Bulowayo, Rhodesia, South Africa (now Zimbabwe) shortly after Mary's arrival there in 1971. Mary and her two daughters left Africa hastily only a few short weeks before the civil war broke out. Joe had apparently become a guerilla fighter and disappeared into the African jungle after their marriage irretrievably broke down and Mary and her daughters, with no means of monetary support, had no choice but to return to Canada. There was much mystery and intrigue that followed their departure from Africa and shrouded the fate of Joe for many years.
Fate or destiny, however, had not yet finished the saga of Mary and Joe. Approximately 22 years after Mary's return to Canada a chance meeting at a rehabilitation halfway house in St. Catharines with the counsellor of one of Mary's then friends just happened to put Joe back into Mary's life for that counsellor was none other than Joseph Gallagher. Since that meeting, until the time of his death on 6 February, 1998 at Niagara Falls hospital, Joe and Mary resumed their life together almost as if the intervening 22 years had not happened. They did not remarry although I know that that was one of Mary's fondest wishes. Observing the second half of their relationship one could not help but wonder at the extraordinary supernormal forces that had brought these two people back together and ponder the purpose therefor.
To all intents and purposes, Joe had been declared dead by the Rhodesian government. Mary received documentation to this effect in order that she could Jim Ryan. Although much of the family had long doubted her fanastic claims, once Joe reappeared on the scene he was very forthright and entirely honest and unrehearsed in talking about his disappearance and subsequent life fighting in the jungle for the South African freedom cause. Joseph Gallagher was born 22 May 1936 at Londonderry, Ireland. He had three sisters that I am aware of: Mamie Conroy in Niagara Falls, the sister who lived in Las Vegas and a sister who was still living in Ireland during 1998. Joe was buried from St. Alfred's Church, Carlton-Vine Street, St. Catharines. Darte & Sons Funeral Homes on King Street, St. Catharines, handled the arrangements. Interment was at Victoria Lawn Cemetery in the 'family' plot with Robert McAloney.
3rd marriage of Mary Winifred was to Mr. James Douglas Ryan, on 8 June 1974 at 5:00 p.m. at Westminster United Church, St. Catharines with the reception to be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Lake Street, St. Catharines. Particulars of this event are taken from an original wedding invitation in possession of Susan Young. Jim Ryan passed away on 12 March 2006. The following is a complete abstract of his obituary:
RYAN, James - After a courageous battle with cancer at the NHS-General Site, St. Catharines on Sunday March 12, 2006 in his 60th year. Loving son of Verna Ryan of St. Catharines, dear brother of Patricia Sanders of North Vancouver B.C. Predeceased by his father Gerald Ryan. At the request of the family there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place. BUTLER (905)684-2334
Mary's 4th marriage was to a Leo Pelletier. We know nothing about this man or his family other than he worked at General Motors for many years retiring on a full pension and that her first husband, Brian Thomson, knew him.
