Hoo St. Werburgh

Hoo St. Werburgh is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Rochester, in the archdeaconry of Rochester, and in the deanery of Rochester.  The church is named St. Werburgh with original parish registers commencing 1587.

Hoo St. Werburgh, or Hoo, a village and a parish in Hoo district, Kent.  The village stands near the Medway, 4 miles northeast by east of Strood rail station;  and has a post office, of the name of Hoo, under Rochester.  The parish comprises 4,822 acres of land, and 1,210 of water.  Real property in 1860, £7,740.  Population in 1861, 1,065.  Houses, 196.  The property is subdivided.

The manor belonged formerly to Earl Godwin and the Bishops of Bayeux;  belongs now to the Earl of Jersey;  and gives him the title of Baron.  Salt marshes, intersected by creeks, are on the Medway;  and there are a quay, a pottery, and tile works.

The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester.  Value, £395.  Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester.the church is ancient but good;  has a fine spire, which serves as a landmark;  and contains several brasses and wood carvings.

There are a national school, the Hoo workhouse, and charities £5.
