HernhillHernhill is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Canterbury, in the archdeaconry of Canterbury and in the deanery of Ospringe. The church is named for St. Michael with registers commencing 1557. Hernhill, a village and a parish in Faversham district, Kent. The village stands 3 miles east of Faversham rail station, and has a post office under Faversham. The parish contains also the hamlets of Dargate, Staple-Street, Waterham, Cockham, Down-Fostal and Rough-hills. Acres, 2,816. Real property in 1860, £7,195. Population in 1861, 701. Houses, 138. The property is much subdivided. The manor belongs to the Archbishop of Canterbury. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury. Value £292. Patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower, and is good. Courtenay, the Canterbury fanatic was buried in the churchyard. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Staple Street, a hamlet in Hernhill and Boughton under Blean parishes, Kent; 3 miles east-south-east of Faversham. It has a post office under Faversham. Other hamlets in Hernhill parish are Crockham, Dargate, The Fostall, Lambert's Land also known as Lamberhurst, Oakwell also known as Slutshole, but you can understand why there's not too much enthusiasm for this), Thread, Waterham, and Wey Street. 1878-9 Epidemics - Diphtheria; 13 children ill with death of 2 in early November 1878. Dr. Dring ordered the school closed on 19 December due to the number of sick children. The school reopened mid-January 1879.1
