| Betteshanger is in the archdeaconry of Canterbury and in the deanery of Sandwich. The parish church is named for St. Mary with registers commencing 1562. Betteshanger, or Betshanger, is a parish in Eastry district, Kent; 3-1/2 miles south-south-west of Sandwich rail station, and 4 miles west of Deal. Post town is Northbourne, under Deal. Acres, 397. Real property £1,700. Population in 1861 was 43. Houses 6. Betteshanger Park belonged formerly to the Boys family, and belongs now to Sir Walter James, Bart. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £166. Patron, Sir W. C. James, Bart. The church is Norman, and has been restored.1
